Fog Light Problems

Hey guys I could really use your input, help and advice. I just purchased a set of Spyder Auto Fog Lights and it was said to be that they were plug and play fog lights. I went ahead and plugged it in and nothing seemed to work. I don't know if I hooked it up wrong but I'm confused as to which cable is Positive or Negative (both cables are Black in color as shown in the picture attached). I was wondering if any of you guys have theses fog lights or can help me figure this out.​

One of the Black wires is attached to the Relay harness and the other to where you connect the Fog Lights. Thats where I'm having my problem. On top of that, the damn push button doesn't fit so I have to get a new one or figure out how to make it fit.

Both the black wires look like grounds. The relay should be powered by the wire with the fuse in it.

 

So how do I connect them? lol Im not to good at this kind of stuff.​

 

Grounds, if you got the length right to the negative side of the battery. If not, any bolt that bolts to the metal chassis (be careful, cause sometimes painted surfaces will not make a good ground). You should be able to see other black wires bolted to the inside fender, core support, or frame with just a bolt. Those would be grounds and so you could just stick it on the same bolt.

 

Okay cool. So nothing needs to be connected to positive side of the battery?​

 

The wire with the fuse in it, coming off the relay, needs to get power from somewhere. I can't tell from the picture, but does it have a connector on it or is that a vampire tap?

 

It has no connector coming off the fuse, it has a vampire tap. Theres another vampire tap that connects to the plug where the push button connects. If that makes sense.

That doesn't sound like my definition of plug and play.

Yeah it did but it basically explained what everything was. The problem i'm having is the two black wires that may be grounds and the vampire taps.​

 

I got a kit similar and ended up cutting all harness plugs off that I didn't need. The wiring is basically: Fogs are grounded directly to frame (black), positive wire (red) from fogs go to relay. Relay has a ground to frame, positive from battery, and a wire going through firewall to switch. Inside the cab, the switch also has a wire coming from an empty in-cabin fuse slot (pick one that goes hot when ignition on) and a wire going to ground.

Looks like mostly everything is setup there.

Install the fogs, ground them. (You have arrow pointing to this in right image)

Connect those 2 white connectors (connects fog to relay).

Power from battery to relay

Ground the relay as well (black, you have arrow pointing to this in left image)

Now fish the wire with the green harness through the firewall, this may be difficult and you might(will) have to disconnect wires from plug to fit through firewall.

There's a bit more to this that you have to do cabin-side but I don't have the time to type it out at the moment. Hope this clarifies a l ittle

 

It really does help man I appreciate it tons. Now the power wire on the relay is going to be the wire on the right with the vampire tap correct?​

 

Yup, looks like the power wire is the white wire with the in line fuse, and the red connector/tap on the end.

 

Right on! Now theres another vampire tap coming the green plug that you can't see in the picture. Im assuming thats to power the push button. Now, I have no idea where to connect that sucker there. Appreciate the help.​

 

No problem! It can be a pain to do, especially with these "plug and play" kits.

There should be 3 wires coming from the green plug.

One is the wire from the relay (the other 2 terminate in the cab, so this is the only wire that passes through the firewall)

Second wire is a ground (You must ground this in the cab somewhere.. I found a bolt that I loosened then tightened over the ground)

Third wire is going to be from the in cabin fuse panel.
>>with the ignition off, Take a multimeter set to 12v DC range, ground the black lead, and take the red one and stick it in an empty slot. Now turn the ignition on, and see if you get power.
What you are trying to do is find a slot that is dead with keys off, and live with keys on. This will only allow your fogs to be on when the ignition is on, if you bypass this part, your fog switch will always be illuminated, drawing current from battery.

Once you find a slot that works, you'll want something called an AddACircuit. Should have it at advance auto/auto zone. Pick up some fuses (less than 2.5A ideal) that fit the AddACircuit.
Throw a fuse into it (2 locations on it, package will tell you where)
Plug into the fuse panel slot you found.
Take the wire from AddACircuit and this is that third wire that goes to the green plug/switch.

 

Followed you instructions and I can say I just wired and installed my fog lights. I appreciate all the help guys, now I just need to get some better light bulbs as the ones that came with the fogs are your OEM style color and safe to say those are ugly. Going to look for either some 6k LED bulbs or maybe even some Yellow ones. Thanks again!​
