FOX Coilovers reviews

Everybody talks about Icon and King coilovers being better than Bilstein, OME and pretty much everybody else. Don't hear much about FOX though. How do they compare to them? They are priced much lower, but other than that...

As Sic already said, you can search the suspension section and find a lot more info. Fox makes great suspension components.
Though I'm curious where you are finding them cheaper than King or Icon? From my searches they typically seem to be the most expensive by a small margin.

 

Yeah, you're probably right about me being crazy but that besides the point! I was looking at the FOX 2.0 no res, just the stock replacement ones. I want to upgrade my suspension with something better than what I've got now. Was thinking bilstein or OME. Saw Fox shocks on the Allprooffroad.com site and thought they would be doable, but now I think I just misread the price. I'm sure they're not $859 for a PAIR. That's more likely each, right?

I got my Fox 2.0 Coilovers for just shy of $800 shipped from Headstrong Offroad. Would recommend.

I was originally considering OME or 5100s, but I ultimately went with performance coilvers. I decided against lifting so I wouldn't have to deal with CV angles and driveshaft vibration issues.

Wow! How's the ride compared to bilsteins or ome? I'm not looking for a lot of lift, just enough to clear the 32s I'm running now.

Ride quality is significantly better than bilsteins or OME. Fox's can be fully tuned to suit your preference, and rebuilt instead of replaced.

I couldn't say. I've never tried either.

I went from stock Tokios to these - huge improvement. You can adjust the preload on these, but I haven't fooled with that yet.
I bought rears as well but haven't installed them yet. Note the rears are only supposed to work with 0-1" of lift.

Fox actually makes the highest quality off-road shocks, which is why the OEM manufacturers use them (Toyota, Ford, Polaris, Yamaha...)

Performance wise they are on par with other manufacturers, and I'd recommend having them custom tuned for your application.

If you're doing anything other than miles of washboard all of the Tacoma front shocks are too soft and bottom out too easily.

 

To expand on that a bit more.

It used to be difficult to make shocks because common machines couldn't hold the necessary tolerances.
But advancements in CNC technology and coatings in the last 15-20 years have made it very easy to produce shocks, hence the flood of new manufacturers.

The trouble is that all the parts inside of a shock need to work together in ways that can't be accurately measured.
So it requires A LOT of testing and experience to get it right. Most new manufacturers (and some old ones) can't or don't invest properly in R&D and are selling 15 year old designs.
The industry has had a lot of incremental advancement in 15 years in terms of performance and durability.
So this day in age it's really easy to make a shock, but it's still very difficult to make a good one.

The last thing you should consider is the design intent of the shock.
A shock & seal package designed to run the baja 1000 is much different than one designed to run 100k miles on the street.
Very few can do both.

 

Bilstein make a great OEM replacement for the price.

If you can spend a little bit more $$, go with the Fox 2.0.

If you can spend MORE $$$, go with King, Fox or Icon 2.5's

You will be happy which ever way you go as these are all better than stock.

In the end, it'll just come down to how much you want to spend.
