Frame rust inspection

Yep.
You have a new frame coming.

 

I wish that was so. I already called the dealer and they said they can't help me. So I called Toyota corporate talk someone. They gave me a case number and called me the next day. They called me back yesterday and said there is nothing they can do and that I would be responsible for any repairs. So now what? Can the frame be repaired or is replacement the only option.

 

This is my experience with the CRC as well. They applied the CRC last year and less than a year later its flaking off pretty bad. It worked about the same as if I had crawled under the truck and sprayed it with Rustoleum undercoating with no real prep work. Im currently trying to decide how I want to treat the frame going forward. Either paying for Krown treatment, or I can spray myself with fluid film, or I can pay a local undercoating company like Zeibart. The only other option I may try but is labor intensive is going at the frame with a needler and then applying POR15. I am not very excited about crawling around under my truck too much anymore.

 

I am pretty sure a local fabrication shop can cut and weld on the frame to repair it.

 

My frame passed a while ago and it isn't all that bad but yes just like everyone else I wanted a new frame for plan on keeping the truck. Anyway after that I started the POR15 treatment. I did it in about two weekends working off and on. It wasn't to terribly bad but was time consuming. I used a grinder to knock off some of the bigger rust spots and flakey stuff. I then bought a bunch of the foam brushes for you'll use them. I did as much as I could and then painted the frame with some rattle can pain and it's sticking. The spare tire carrier and frame back there was flakey and a pain to work on. I also did the front control arms too. My frame wasn't horrible so it wasn't bad just took some time is all. I pulled my truck onto some solid 4" blocks to raise it a little which helped with getting under it.

If you POR15 it buy the 6 pack and use an entire small can and then take a break. Wear gloves long sleeve shirt hat bandana etc to protect your skin. Fumes weren't bad for I did it outside. There is a 'thread' on here where a guy did it and I still need to add my experience with it there.

 

Did you use the Marine Clean and Metal Prep when you applied the POR15? Also how is it holding up?

 

I did use the metal prep on some areas/surfaces that were fairly smooth but I didn't use it on every piece of the frame that's for frickin sure. I did it back in July and so far so good I also only have one 800 mile trip on the truck since then too.

I've been under it a couple times and found some areas that are still 'shiny' and re-hit it with some flat black paint. I can/could only find the por in the glass black in the smaller cans so I then used some rattle can paint to make it a semi-flat black. I'm happy with the appearance hope it does the job. Hardest part was the curve of the frame over the rear axle and that area where I pretty much just 'slapped' the por15 on that area.

BTW I wasn't on who was constantly painting it when it was 'tacky' as the instructions imply or say to do but I did try. I am still touching places up with the rattle can paint.

I'm no expert and there is a lot of info available here in TW, but I believe that is incorrect. The frame was inspected, found ok and coated by Toyota, correct? If that is the case that means your truck is covered until 2021, at least according to everything I read here and also by going through the frame replacement on my 06. Do you have any proof of what was done to your truck?

 

The 2001-04 Tacomas have a 15 warranty on their frames after getting it inspected, but 2005-08 Tacoma have no extended warranty like the older models.
