Frame rust recall

Few left driveshafts or the Sticker says "Dana Holding corporation" and not a "Dana Corporation".

"Dana Holding corporation" is new company created after bankruptcy and not liable for Dana Corp items (just like New GM is not liable for old GM cars)
So 2009+ frame recall would devastate Toyota and its very unlikely. They may do 2009 as special since they may have put old Dana frames on 2009 trucks (some 2009 trucks were produced in 2008) but that is it. It seems that Everybody afterwards will have to eat the cost of rusty frames from now on and thats a $13K repair according to Toyota so I doubt many will do that, also this is not covered by Insurance.
We see how it plays out.

As the rest of us find our hidden death trap that was lurking under our seats. I'll be here crying about how my rental is a Corolla, how they ordered my frame 6 months ago and my truck is still sitting in the dealers lot, how I got 14K of crap for free, then finally, I'll post how my truck rides like it's new and drive off into the sunset.

 

I went to Nye, on RT 5 out towards Oneida. They are in the country, and I get treated very well there. The service manager came out and explained the process to me that the truck would be going through. And what would be covered and what would not. He said it would get all new brake lines, and rear leafs if I wanted them. He also said something about upper or lower control arms get replaced,not sure which. He also said anything mounted to the frame that breaks in the process of removal they will include, except for some reason power steering lines. He said some trucks have an issue with them. He said during the process labor rates will be reduced, if there is any other work I would like done. I'll be around 225 K or so at that point and might check on getting the clutch done then. I have never used Burdick, but have had terrible problems at Romano Toyota in East Syracuse before. Hope this helps.

Don't know what will happen to 2009+ trucks but they are rusting and Toyota is fighting the cases.
Its going get ugly for sure.

 

The article I read indicated it was pretty early in the case, but I'm just curious how Toyota is going to defend recalling 700,000 Tacomas for corrosion issues, and the issues across two gens of trucks. It'll be interesting.

 

If they win and it stays that Toyota is not responsible beyond the warranty period than nobody really will get anything because Toyota warranty explicitly avoids frame. So I think body gets 8 years but frame is 3/36000 which is not enough to corrode.
The only way to avoid sinking 30k into garden ornament is to avoid buying anything Toyota has problem with until there is a solution.
And quality of Tacoma is not improving. 2016 Tacoma has been on the market for only a month and there is already a safety recall.
Toyota should have never move out of NUMMI.

 

Put my truck in yesterday, failed the inspection as I knew it would! They said it's safe to drive... Now the waiting game begins. Was talking to a guy there yesterday who was putting his in for the frame swap, he waited just over 5 months. Wonder how big my hole will get after another winter of salt.

 

Jeff, what was the total cost if any when you picked up your truck?

The reason I am asking is the dealer told my son that he might have to pay for new shocks (Bilstein) if they think they need to be replaced. The truck rides and drives very good, and I do not see any leakage from the shocks. Also wondering if they will replace the leaf springs since his is not a 4X4

His 05 is going in next week after waiting 3 months for the frame and misc parts to come in.
I told the dealer that we would not need a vehicle for the 3 days needed with 2 techs to complete this project. I figure I am saving them money by waving the vehicle and can use this for leverage if they try to charge him for parts they say cannot be reused.

Any info is appreciated,

Smitty,that is not the way it works.
Dealer is not paying for anything,Toyota is. So your not saving dealer anything.
They make their $ from the service work completed.
You have the right to refuse any work,although if your shocks are shot no additional labor charge for replacement should be liable to you. The dealer must uninstall and install anyway.
My advice,if the shocks are rusted to ****, buy a "new" used set from someone taking theirs off a new truck to lift. Hand them to the dealer and tell them to put them on the new frame.
Regarding the rear springs,a new set should be installed while completing the frame swap.
I have been told by other members you should get another set next year when Toyota has the final replacement sets made.
I am speaking from my own experience.
I had a frame swap done a month ago,and was given a bill for $12K.
No charge to me.
New bolts,hangers,gaskets,fuel lines,LCAs,rear springs,etc.,at no charge to me.

5 months later, frame is finally in and ready. Was initially told that I would be on the hook for any extra time that the truck sat in the bay while waiting for parts to come in if they find things associated with the lift that they couldn't re-use or realize that the original part is no longer there. (I didn't save any of the original parts when the lift was put on)

Told them to put the truck on the lift and let me go over it with the tech that would be doing the work. We went thru his parts list from Toyota and started making a list of everything I would need to provide. Got it down to steering knuckles, front coilovers and rear shocks (they are letting me choose and supply the coilovers and shocks as long as it bolts in and doesn't require anything else), and wheels and tires that will fit. Luckily I saved the original wheels and tires. Probably going to cost me $1200-1500 out of pocket when it's all said and done.

I should be able to sell the Fox coilovers and rear shocks, and the wheels and tires to help offset the cost. Could be worse. They obviously won't cut a new frame to put everything back on, but they aren't being total dicks about it either, and so far they've been fairly understanding.

Just wanted to post this up in case anybody else with a 6" lift is wondering what to do.

 

The frame being covered under 3/36 doesn't make sense, it's just too short of a period for a vehicle, considering powertrain runs to 60k. I bet it's covered under body.

 

Unless you give them a set of front shocks loaded onto the coil springs, they might try to charge you for the labor to remove the spring from the old shock and load the new shock onto the spring. When they remove them to do the frame swap, they take them out as a loaded unit. I agree that not taking the rental is no leverage on them.

 

I know 3/36 does not make sense, but that is what I was told by both: dealer and Toyota corporate, when I complained that my frame is rusting. They told me that I was informed about warranty at the time of purchase so frame rotting is my problem.
I now have new frame on Toyota dime ha ha.

 

My truck is basically done. They said the shifter cable bushing should be replaced and the part was out of stock so had to order it. Looks like a new truck from underneath. Should have it back next week. I'll see how it drives then. They also had a bunch of 2016s that just arrived. I thought they looked better than the pics I'd seen.

The frame swap shouldn't cost you anything. They will always try to 'suggestive' sell something - but you can refuse it.

When I got mine done - they called me and recommended spark plugs, cabin filter, and something about the parking brake cable. I flat out told them...NO THANKS, I do the work myself (plugs and cabin filter were changed in spring). When I went in to visit my truck - the tech showed me the parking brake cable thing where it enters into the drum. It just looked a little corroded but hardly bad enough to spend $600 they quoted to have it fixed. No Thanks!
