Do you have to pull valve covers to change the timing cover? Honestly i don't know And don't have the tacoma manual in front of me right now. If so, then there is a reason for it to be cracked open.

Hey as, i don't think anyone was trolling you, i sure wasn't. Some poeple are just better at words than others. I hope your truck truck tur s out great and last for years to come trouble free

Bottom line... no motor should sit around with valve covers off, oil all over valvetrain, in the general maintenance area of a Toyota service bay... impossible for dirt to not get into motor

It's just the valve covers. The motor is not "open" like a lot of you are saying. No debrees will get into the cumbustion chamber. Oil slows through that whole area and gets ran through the filter.

I will admit in a dealer ship I would have liked to see it a bit more organized then "Joes quick n cheap" around the corner. maybe throw it on an engine stand and the valve covers not laying face fuking down on top of other shit.

But it's still a garage. There's a reason they don't like customers in there or any shop, a lot of you guys are in a freakin dream world if picture an organized high tech lab, white glove set up. It's a shop, there replacing sub 20k$ truck frames for free as fast as they can.
You're truck will be fine a.s. And when you get it back I'm sure they will help you as you find stuff wrong.

I would NEVER leave the engine open like that - at least I'd put some clean rags over it. If I knew any mechanic or dealer that did this - especially when they try to justify this - they will never get within 10 feet of my vehicle.

Everyone here is a fucking expert. Opinions are like assholes, everybody has one. How do you know the valve covers weren't taken off 10 mins before the pic and put back on a 1/2 hour after the pic was taken?

My thought, this was the mechanics first attempt at this. I reviewed a lot of pictures that were posted. It seems to me that rather than pulling the cab off the frame and leaving the engine mounted to the frame, he attempted pulling the motor first, with a cherry picker. He probably pulled the valve cover and disconnected a lot of components to access the upper transmission bolts. Nothing about this picture seems professional. By the time this is done you will probably have a lot of missing bolts and a lot of problems.

One thing I find interesting about this forum is the swaying of public opinion. The mechanics are ass holes for 10 or 15 posts straight for pulling the valve covers, now for the last 5 posts straight they are right. Entertaining crowd for sure.

You're opinion will never change mine either. I don't have an opinion because I don't have enough information to form an opinion, nor does anyone here.
Missing bolts? Lot's of problems? 1st time doing this? ..based on what? A picture?
You guys are killing me.. This is a Tacoma frame replacement! ALL DEALERS have performed MANY of these at this point..
Uneducated? The only uneducated comments I see hear, are the one forming opinions without knowing the facts.

BTW.. There is a year warranty with the work performed. I think he'll know right away if it does end up a disaster as the uninformed predict.

Didn't have it inspected at one and repaired at another, but I did take it to 3 dealerships to have it inspected. Passed the first 2 times and failed on the 3rd. I recommend at least a second opinion if they pass it. Have to drive an hour for the replacement, but I can handle that for a new frame.

Er.. so what do you propose affected owners do? Hang around the dealership and supervise the frame replacement?
I've know 3-4 people that had them replaced in the last year. No problems reported by any of them. Replacements went fine.

This far into the campaign, i'd be willing to bet most dealers are competent in doing the job. I know my dealer here in MA has done in excess of 100 replacements.
