Front Diff Questions

I know there are some posts regarding similar issues but I wanted to make sure my diff doesnt grenade while driving down the road.

05 DBL Cab OR drove perfect until the installation of the 3" toytec last week (one piece DS, 3 degree shims, front diff drop) 65k miles. Ever since I have the common front diff hum (sounds harmonic to me) between 5-40 mph. As soon as 4x4 is engaged sound is gone and drives smooth as glass.

My questions
1. When spinning the Drivers side wheel you can hear the spyder gears clicking inside the front diff, passenger side is quiet.
2. Is it still safe to drive without damaging the diff?
3. How hard is it to change the drivers side bearing if needed? Pressed in? Diff removal?
4. Is there any easy way to check the bearing other than play in the shaft? I know some play is normal could it be the clip on the end of the shaft?
5. Does anyone have pics of the inside of the diff or the bearings that are good/bad?

Look for a thread by Krookz. Iirc he had a similar problem with his truck and he figured it out. I think it was the seals maybe?

 

Thats what I'm afraid of. I have heard the drivers side is a PITA....have any feedback on that?

I have been looking around but I can't seem to find anyone with pics or removal/install info either. It's not leaking anywhere so I didnt think it was a seal issue...stranger things have happened though.

 

Well crap...that leaves us used owners with 65k out on the street. Hopefully someone comes up with something...
