garage heater

looking for a good electric heater to heat my two car garage but wount break the bank

 

You are going to be hard pressed to get a electric heater that is going to heat the unit.

My father has a 5500 watt heater and it barely gets his metal working shop warm enough. It is only about 8 x 20.

A full two car garage is typically more than double that.

It is fully insulated as well with a lower ceiling that you would see in a garage.

If you are going to use a electric furnace it will work, just stay away from the unit I mentioned above.

I did hvac for about three years. You best bet is to hit craigslist for a used gas home heater that is 60,000 btu. Typically had for about $100 if you look for a bit.

 

I heat my garage with a heater I got for Christmas 5 years ago....i forgot the name of it..I'll have to look.....but it's black with silver handles....blows pretty good. It's from Home Depot.....prolly 60 - 70 bucks.....it's 34 degrees outside and I was out there smoking cigars and drinking earlier and had to turn it down.

Granted mine's a 1 car garage but it does work good. When I go back out I'll check the model.

 

I just use a space heater and point it at my work area.

 

May be better to use two heaters.

 

DEFINITELY use an oil heater.

they are under $100, I used 2 of them to heat my entire house last winter!

Don't remember exactly, think it was around $350. It's 5000W / 240V and does a nice job heating my 2.5 car insulated garage.

I keep the thermostat set at 50 deg. If I want it warmer when working out there it only takes a few minutes to warm up. The increase in my electric bill seems minimal. It was about $300.

I have an old one almost just like that, minus the goofy cage. I put only computer heat sinks (or empty beer/soda cans on the top) and it helps to increase heat production.

 

I have this one...but in black....works great!

I've got a 5 or 6 foot long 240v baseboard heater that does the trick on my double car insulated garage.

 

I use an oil filled space heater to heat my 2 car garage similar to the picture below.



I insulated my garage including the 16' door a few years ago. It heats up my garage to a comfortable temp in about an hour when it's around 30ish degrees outside. The one I have also has two different heating elements on it and a thermostat. I usually have to turn it down after a while because it starts to get hot in the garage. I can work out there in a T-shirt.

 

My dad has a Reddy Heater 35 and it will sweat us out of a 3 stall garage in the winter. They are very nice to have because they're portable, easy to aim and don't require a 240V circuit, they run off a standard 120V just to run the blower.

 

Those heat it up nice and quick, however they're super loud.

 

You're correct, the one my dad has isn't loud to the point where it would bother you to work on your own, but it makes it difficult if you're working with someone. You always end up shouting over it.

 

i have a 55,000BTU forced air heater as well, heats up areas in seconds however it sucks the oxygen out of your workspace so you need to be ventilated.

 

Anyone ever used a heater out of a camper? I was wondering if/how that would work. You could make your own stand/mount so it is somewhat portable (move around the garage, in the house during power outages, camping) and it uses propane.
