Glovebox piston/hydraulic

Has anyone every broken that hydraulic on the glove box? My friend pulled down on the glove box (not knowing it drops down slowly on its own with the hydraulic piston). The clip isn't broken but the catching edges on the two pronged upper clip are rounded off. So you can snap it back on the clip, but it'll just slide off the next time you try to open it.

I'm thinking of snapping the hydraulic back on and putting a little dab of silicone or epoxy to build up an edge that prevents it from slipping off.

Before I do this though, does anyone have any better ideas or done something different?

 

i've done this too installing my ipod adapter, so i played with it for so long that i eventually got it to work. I was freaking out when i did it too so i wasn't taking my time like i should have.

 

So what method was it that you used?

 

Did the same to mine. I just left it off. It is kind of cheap and really not needed.

 

I don't know that there was really a method to the madness i just kept trying new things until it worked. i used a flat head screwdriver to hold the piston on to close the glove compartment.

 

Mine broken off over and over and then finally the piston broke and zero hydraulic. It was still under warranty, MINE is rounded off as well and so I can't put anything heavy in there or it'll just unclip itself and slam open.

 

mine came off too and kept coming off so i told the dealer when i was there and they put a new one on and he said if it came off again he would probably have to change out the entire dash. it came off again as soon as i opened it but it wasn't worth all that hassle

 

My 2008 Tacoma has not had this problem... until today! While installing the cabin air filter for the nth time the piston fell off the dash nub and wouldn't stay on. I read all the solutions but wanted something a little more permanent. I did use a screw to spread the barbs on the dash nub. I also drilled through the slot of the nub with a 5/64" bit. I used a small screw and a lug from a duplex receptacle as a washer. It went together nicely and is holding great.
