It's an APRS site. Tactical radio communication for amature radio use. But many organizations also participate I believe.

 

I also know you're doing about 14km/hr and your vessel is about 130m long, supposedly

Phil this is good stuff to know. So that way when you download the APRS so all your 4x4 buddies know where the pain in the ass trailhead is when you're out wheeling, you'll also remember to turn off the aprs if your vehicle speed happen to exceed what the Local law enforcement finds to be an acceptable speed..... Haha

 

Not sure how familiar you are with the info you are receiving but it is called the Automatic Identification System or AIS which is broadcast over marine VHF channel 70. The length is user entered information we we have put in correctly at 425ft. Curious the speed returns in Km to you, we get that info in Kts which currently is 9.4kt. That system also broadcasts destination, vessel type, persons on board, and ETA among other vessel data points.

 

Btw the vessel name was a complete shot in the dark.

Well that's cool. What are the ways you guys use that info?

 

Well right now we’re getting the live data plugged right into my navigation computer overlayed on the chart. So the primary use would be collision avoidance. But we can also check other vessels to look for open anchorages or see if someone is at or going to a dock we need to be at.

 

Be honest. Are you guys every in a situation where your seeing vessel xyz make a book for an opening and you're like NOPE, suckers ours

This system has made a lot of people honest. There are plenty of spots around NY where there is only room for 1 person on a turn or at a tight spot. People occasionally would embellish their location or speed to make someone else back down. Now I check it constantly and definitely there are times where we call them up and say sorry bud, your too slow and we have the right of way. There’s not a lot of situations where we can race anyone out for something, but we keep and eye on what everyone else is doing.
