Was out for a drive today, found a good spot to pull over and back up a small dirt road to take my dog out. As i stopped and put my 2016 trd sport into reverse it made a clunk from the rear and a grinding sound. I promptly parked and tried to spec it out, but had to drive the 2 miles home. When driving it makes a metal on metal sound, Got my brother over to assist and when i drive forward the sound is not as prevalent but very loud when backing up. It seems to be coming from the rear axle/ differential. Anyone have any insight?

I drove forward and reverse down my street at slow speeds, seems like it gets louder when braking, sound coming from back left brake drum. Unsure if this information modifies any insight

Maybe something got up in your drum brake? Take off the outer brake hub and see if anything is there. Otherwise I would see a mechanic. It could be something simple

Maybe try and pull the drums? Or go for a drive and feel the rear wheels if one is warm or hot your shoes may be sticking.

    Or check rear differential fluid.

    Is it still in warranty?

Pull the wheel and inspect brakes. You may have something messed up with brake shoes, or E brake cable.

I pick up rocks on my dirt road occasionally. Pull that drum and see if you have one in there.

Got all my lugs off, couldnt even remove my wheel. Tried heel kicking in to no avail. Pretty dark out now. Gonna call it a day and try again tomorrow.
Anyone else has any insight, please post your replies.

All your insight is appreciated :)

Rusted/bonded together? I’d spray pb blaster around the mating point if it were me over night… but I’m no mechanic

+1 for checking to see if something is stuck. Happens to me often while out hunting, probably 3-4 times the last two years. Little stick or rock caught somewhere up in the drum area. Usually works itself out in a few seconds, never had to pull of the tire but could be you’re problem.

Wheel center is stuck on the hub. Hit the inside of the tire (don't hit your wheel) with a sledgehammer and it'll pop loose. Just rotated all 4 today and had to bump them all.

Should have posted yesterday, but I figured it out.

Wound up being my heat shield for my fuel tank. It got slightly bend outwards and was rubbing up on my driveshaft. Needed to get right underneath to actually see it but noticed a clean metal wear on the shaft which made me investigate further. A bend back to normal fixed it.

Thanks for everyone's insight, super appreciated it.
