Help Understanding Alignment Cams

    I have new UCA’s coming this week, and I’m trying to understand the alignment cams before they show up. Right now, I have a visible positive camber, and my caster seems low:
    The alignment tech said that I don’t have any more adjustment left in the alignment cams. But looking at them, it seems like I do - but I don’t really know what I’m looking at. Can someone tell me if these really are adjusted to their limits already?

    Adjustment with only the lower cams is a balance between caster and camber. You still have room to adjust those cams, but they might be set up to get both values in spec. Adjusting them further may help with one number but throw the other out of whack.
    What UCAs did you get? The nice thing about adjustable arms is that you can dial in caster and camber independently.

    That makes sense. I ordered the SPC arms. Not sure where to set them before I go in for an alignment though. Assuming neutral caster setting and ball joint all the way out for camber.

    Caster 3+ ( I run 5) camber and toe as close to zero as possible.

    Most alignment techs will have no idea how to adjust the UCAs in conjunction with the lower cams. Depending on what size lift, tires, etc, you will want to make sure the UCAs are set beforehand so that the alignment can be adjusted to where you want it using the lower cams only.

    Yeah that’s what I’m hoping to do. I just don’t know where to set the UCA’s before going in.

    What size tires are you running? If you need to maximize clearance to the firewall, you’ll need to keep caster to a minimum at the UCA and try to max it out with the lower cams. If you don’t need as much clearance, either the neutral +2 setting or slightly more positive caster will let them increase total caster, which will help handling, self-centering, etc.

    Personally I have the UCAs set at +2 and the LCA cams maxed out to get as much clearance as possible at the firewall to be able to stuff 35’s.

    It’s pretty easy to set camber yourself, just get a flat bar that fits across the outer edges of your wheels. Easiest way is to use a digital protractor to measure the angle, shoot for zero and adjust using the upper ball joint but.

    I’m running 285/70/17 on stock wheels with 1.25” spacers.

    I would guess that you will have some rubbing on the back of the fenderwell/mudflap area if you set the caster on the UCAs to much more than +2 (D setting, I think). I would put it there to start, and see if the alignment shop can max out the lower cams to increase clearance to the firewall. If you can show them how to adjust the ball joint nut to change camber, they should be able to bring camber back to spec without screwing with caster.

    I'll be honest though, I've gone to a number of "good" alignment shops, and I ended up learning how to do my own alignments because none of them could get it right. It's a little bit of a pain in the ass, and to really do it right you need some special tools, but in the end you can fine tune it and understand how it all works much better after figuring it out yourself.

    Max cams for most caster, set UCA's @ neutral (+2°) & that'll give you between 4 & 5° caster. It gave me 4.4° on both left & right.
