Cool, I almost got a 10.5" upper but by the time I decided to get one (I was debating 556 vs 6.8 SBR) they were out of stock so I just got a 7" barreled upper and just submitted my form 1 on saturday so I can build an SBR and keep my "Pistol" lower open.

I have a Pistol grip 12 GA Pump hanging horizontal on the bed rail. Easy to grab in case Mr. Piece of shit is coming thru the front or back door.

We also installed those master lock door security bars on the doors over the weekend. You know the ones that cradle under the door knob and angle down to the floor. I know the security bars won't stop an intruder but it will at least cause enough noise along with our German Shepherd for us to wake up and be ready. Sadly last week an 85 year old man lost his life protecting his wife in a home invasion a few miles away. He did manage to shoot one of the bastards and both shitheads are now behind bars charged with Capital Murder. R.I.P Mr. Rudd

Home defense: pistol grip pump 12g with barrell cut to shortest ur state will allow. The cock alone will scare off just about anyone and if that doesnt work you got a nice short shotgun to wield in the tight spaces of your house. And although it wont spread much in close quarters its still more than a single bullet. Next best would be a 9mm. But these are just my opinions.

An angry wife or a pack of wild dogs should keep any intruder Out of your home but just in case a shotgun is the safest option do to over penetration from a rifle or handgun.
Most importantly your state of mind and training are always your best weapons

I can clear any standard doorway with an 870 with 18.5" barrel and a youth size butt stock.

For that matter, the shotgun racking noise is a wives tale.

Anyone who waits to load a weapon so the criminal is able to hear it being done is a total idiot and armchair ninja who doesn't have a clue.

Its simple for me, 9mm 115-147gr JHP +P rounds, 17 to be exact, my training and my laser site will probably pull me through but that extra couple of rounds if needed will make sure you get your point across if needed. Thats not to say the 12 gauge pump which is close by with 7 rounds of 3" magnum 00 Buck would not be my first choice given the right circumstances...

Why not a higher caliber? two words, walls and innocents.

I think the correct answer is the weapon you're the most familiar and comfortable with. I grew up with pump shotguns but many I see today short shuck and in a critical situation that could be an epic fail. Also see a lot of people that can't hit a bull in the butt with a pistol standing next to it in the barn.

Ship's self defense I could use any weapon I wanted but always grabbed the Ithaca 37, I grew up with them. At home I have a 37 that never leaves the house or sees the inside of the gun safe but my kids are long gone from the house. Chamber and first round are 650 pellets each of #9. They will remove a lot of flesh at close range with a cyl. choke. After that slugs, figure if I need those I am in trouble anyhow and wall penetration is no longer an issue. My nearest neighbors are fairly far away.

There might be a .40 and a couple of .357 laying around too. They would be wheel guns, call me old school but when I pull the trigger I want it to go bang every time.

Revolvers can have pawl wear, spring breakage, and cylinder timing issues that make them not fire every time you pull the trigger. Not sure why the revolver crowd has to beat that silly drum, I've never had an issue with an auto loader or a revolver, for that matter - but both are susceptible to failure.

12 guage shotgun with buck shot or slug. Someone trying to break in through the door, blow the damn door out of the frame. Goodbye door but also goodbye uninvited intruder.

Pistola. A S&W 5906 with night sights & loaded with 147gr. subsonic HP's, at the moment. It's what I keep on my bedstand so it's accessible. It's easy to take in & out of the mini-safe I keep there, so I have it there every night. It's not unwieldy to get around doors/walls. It's an all-steel gun so recoil is minimal, but the rounds still have plenty of punch. And since it's loaded with subsonics I won't go instantly deaf if I fire it indoors (I've tested it at the range without ear protection to check).
One thing I wonder about the people who opt for a shotgun or an AR for a 'bedstand' gun is if they've ever fired one in an enclosed space without hearing protection. Because it hurts, and you can't hear shit for a while afterwards. And I don't sleep with earplugs in, so I figure it's an important consideration. :notsure:

Well it could be that while spending 20 years in the military it was common to start out with a dozen 1911's and at the end of the session have 4 or 5 working ones, with parts from the others to keep them running. Kind of sticks with you.... Yes many were likely made in 1911 too LOL. But it is real world experience.

Same with jamomatic shotguns... Have to admit love my Benellis and they seldom jam but there is the infamous Benelli "click". Even pump shotgun have issues or at least some of the new ones do. No way in hell I would use an 870 Express in a life or death situation. But the original Wingmaster or all steel Winchester 12 or Ithaca 37? Sure.

No mil experience for me, but agreed - experience is the best teacher.

My 1911s have all been perfect (except for one Kimber), as have my Glocks (and my S&W and Taurus wheel guns). That said, if I had to wear one for a living I'd probably go with Glock over my beloved 1911s.
