How much under MSRP?

Just curious how much under MSRP could you get a Tacoma for before the Covid BS happened? On average about $3-$4k?

 

I bought mine for about $6k under MSRP in December 2020

I lied a whole bunch to the salesman and convinced him I really hated the truck and didn’t want it lol, at one point I actually walked out of the dealership and he came and got me and I was like “ugh fine”

 

Sounds about right from everyone who comes into the 'waiting for my 2021-22' threads to tell the group how glad they are they purchased before covid.

Depends on the trim level. You get more off on higher trims vs. base models.

 

Got mine for $3000 CAN under MSRP. Price was 42500, got it for 39500.

But from what I've heard from people I know who bought one around here is that the dealers don't come down that much below MSRP. Some of the highest I've heard was around $3k-$4k for around here.

I had always wanted a Tacoma, but never really had the money for one. I looked at them again when I bought my previous vehicle in 2019 when I was looking at the new RAV4, but the prices were still a little too high for me at the time and I didn't exactly have a need for a truck. Glad I didn't pull the trigger then too because the Tacomas didn't come with Android Auto then (which is strange since the RAV4 had it).

In 2020 when Covid hit and nobody was traveling, I saw the Tacoma's dropped in price a little, but the value for the car that I just purchased a year earlier (and just paid off) dropped like almost $10k, so I decided to keep it and not have a car payment.

2021 came and I got rid of my motorcycle (yes, I miss it) and bought a 4-wheeler as I would get year round use out of it instead of just a few months like I do with the bike. So then my needs changed and could use something to haul the 4-wheeler with...as well as I'm looking to buy some land for hunting and a small cabin and would need the truck for that.

2022 shows up and the used car prices were crazy and my 2019 Hyundai Tucson went back up in value from where it was in 2020 and I found a TRD OR for MSRP, so I figured if they were going to give me an extra $4,500 - $5k for my trade, paying MSRP would be about the same as what I would have gotten before this crazy market started.

I was just looking to see if my theory was correct or if I made a mistake and should have waited until the market corrected itself. Either way, I'm still happy with my purchase...lol.

Good question. I think a lot of it depends on how much homework one does before the purchase, where you are located, and how much competition there is where you are. I live in the San Francisco Bay area, and I can't even count how many Toyota dealers there are in the 100 mile radius! So when I was looking for my tacoma, I got familiar with the dealer websites within that 1000 mile radius, and ended up actually visiting 3. A couple of things, I highly recommend those Toyota dealers where ONE PERSON handles everything, and not like those old fashioned dealers where you meet and get a rapport with a sales person, only to be told that you need to talk with "their manager", when it comes to negotiating a deal! I hate those things! In any case, if there are a lot of dealers around, if you know what kind of vehicle you want, get familiar with the inventory at the dealers, and then, see what they are offering for incentives. Now I get it, no incentives are being offered now, because they don't need to, and they probably don't even have any new vehicles on the lot anyway! But this was BEFORE covid, etc. Anyway, I found a dealer that was offering $2500 discount on top of, that being offered by Toyota, which at the time, was $500. So that was a $3000 discount for my truck. BUT, that dealer didn't have my truck, and the girl who was working with me, just didn't have the security clearance on the Toyota computer system, to be able to look far and wide for trucks either already in the area, coming soon to a dealer near you, or being manufactured! I found a totally cool female sales person at the dealer I ended up buying from, and this girl KNEW the Toyota system inside and out, and had complete clearance. She found that they were actually scheduled to build my truck, and it was destined to go to another dealer. however, because I said "I wanted it", she was able to actually DIVERT that truck once it was built, from that dealer to hers, so I got my truck! The cool thing too, was that she texted me the whole dang way, from the beginning when my truck first hit the assembly line, to when it came off the line and was being test driven and loaded onto the truck for delivery! She even followed it as it crossed the border from Mexico to the dealer! Now, I got carried away, but, my point was, that the other dealer that was offering the large discount, was about an hour away, but because the girl there could not search the system as my saleslady was able to, I went with this other dealer, but my saleslady HONORED the price from that other dealer, so I GOT MY DISCOUNT! How cool was that??? Of course, because I live in CA, the sales tax rate at that time where I live, was 9.75%, which meant that I paid just over $3000 in sales tax alone, which pretty much wiped out that discount! But hey, I did save $3000 and i was totally happy with that. Now the cool thing is that I have had the truck now for just over 3 years, and the dealer is actually offering me MORE than what I paid for it! Its a great world to live in, if you want to SELL your truck, but not if you want to BUY ONE!

 

I bought my Taco in Feb 21', it was RIGHT before the market took off. I got $1k off MSRP. I saw the prices were starting to climb, so I didn't haggle with the dealership at all. I took it and ran.

Fun Fact: After I signed all the paperwork and got the keys I was walking out to get into the truck. A guy walked up to the truck with his wife next to him. He said "I told you it would be here! This is it. This is the EXACT truck I've been looking for."

I'm glad he didn't see me get in it and drive away. Imagine the sad look on his mug when he heard the news "Uh, we JUST sold that truck...see it driving away?"

 

Not talking about msrp but I heard someone say the 2016 where 20k now they are 30k

 

I bought my brand new, 2019 TRD OR Premium w/ leather, sunroof and tech package for $36k + change after some haggling. They also threw in a free season pass to my local ski resort.

MSRP at the time was $42k? So about 10-ish percent wasn't out of the question in my area (PNW)

I also haggled with them pretty hard, like pretending I didn't like the truck, leaving the dealership "unimpressed" and timing my purchase visit to land at the end of February so I knew they'd be hungry to hit quota

 

Haha atta boy. I did the same thing and also timed my visit to correspond with the end of February so they were extra hungry to hit their month end quota lol

 

That's pretty good! I got a '22 OR with Tech & LED lights, all-weather floor mats, mud flaps, bed lights, and predator steps and MSRP was $41,530.

Paid 40,500 for my pro brand new in 18. Sticker was 46 and some change.

 

Not a bad deal at all. The only thing you got hammered on are the accessories you listed that they usually say ‘already come with the truck’. For example I paid $30 for OEM bed lights and plugged them in myself. Same with their OE all weather mats and mud flaps and bed mat.

But if that’s all, then yep you got a decent deal for 2022 , and of course you are in your truck, and no longer waiting. Enjoy and congratulations.

 

I got my 2020 TRD Sport Premium 6MT for $5k under MSRP including weather tech floor mats and the Pro skid plate. This was June 2020. I am glad I bought when I did.

 

Theory is correct. Market has a lot of competition, but if you have a decent trade in you'll get great value on that spectrum and pay list for the new one. If no trade, then you're pretty much stuck with what it is.

Traded in my Honda accord lease and got almost $3k in early trade in credit, and got the tacoma for sticker, so felt like i made out alright in the end.
