Typically Prius owners buy them for reliable and cheap transportation, which is why I bought one myself. They often go hundreds of thousands of miles with little to no issues. Toyota’s hybrid systems are bulletproof and maintenance is also super easy. Most leafs are great the first couple of years in ownership, until they start having reliability issues, their value plummets, and you end up paying more to fix it then it’s worth. Toyota took a different approach with their hybrid program from the start, which is why they’ve been so successful.

They try to run the grid high and see if it levels off. We're talking 1% over capacity. After that its time to bleed off power.

Agree. I'm likely in the latter group.

Well, I'm sure the toyota is rock solid, I just thought it was an infuriating experience?

That looks like a switch opening to me, the arcs are a side effect of trying to turn off a ridiculous amount of current, not a way to bleed off power.

When the grid is running with more generation than demand, the frequency creeps up, which they do not want. Its a game of adjusting the generation up and down by turning off or adjusting sources more than anything. A lot of sources are either off or on, or have a very limited range of adjustment, or take forever to adjust (nuclear, for example). Other things like wind turbines and gas turbines can be adjusted on the fly. I've never heard of bleeding off power with an arc.

To say the least, I am suspicious of this power engineer.

Well, he said a lot of other technical stuff I didn't really get. We're talking about bleeding off excess power so it doesn't blow transformers when you have a very short reaction time. He went into peaking plants, the speed of the big ones and the smaller ones, which ones they use in CFL depending on reaction times. That we have no pumped hydro in Florida, and 60 v 61 hertz vs... I don't know. I just looked on youtube for a video. I was also drinking during the conversation, so take it with a grain of salt.

Hmm, maybe. That would be the fastest way if you were in a hurry and you didn't have too much to get rid of. Neat.

Self driving is far away if ever.

We're already at a point where the wealthy are driving electric vehicles. Telsa makes the best selling luxury sedan now. The turning point in the future is when the poor are no longer driving gas vehicles.

It's definitely not fast, but in power mode it will spin the tires just a little. The CVT also took a lot of getting used to for me. I think that trans removes a lot of responsiveness as well, but it's an awesome design from an efficiency standpoint.

Look at the price of used leaves/leafs. Their value drops like a rock. Our Prius was extremely cheap (free) because my step parents gave it to us at 88k miles. That is also a big reason why we love it...it is the best type of car there is. It feels very thin, though, especially after riding in my taco with all of the sound deadening I have done.

They definitely shave weight so it does feel “thin” like you mentioned, but it’s also a money saver. Our other vehicle is a new RAV4 Hybrid which is also paid off. It’s nice to spend $100 on gas a month between 2 vehicles and be able to log about 1700 miles, while being able to service them easily myself and also save tons.

And certain models of the BMW i3 if I’m not mistaken.

Tesla sells those vehicles because they are luxury and have bonkers performance numbers. Its excellent for bragging rights, which is why they sell. People buy luxury badges to brag to their neighbors how great they are. A Lexus ES350 is just an over priced camry.

No, it is a traditional hybrid like the prius, but they have a fancy transmission that connects the engine directly to the wheels. They marketed it like you think, but that's not how it works.

The I3 had an optional range extender that charged the batteries, but it was honestly just shit.

I think the Fisker Kharma is the car that you are thinking of, but it ran the damned engine all the time and was extremely inefficient.
