Ignition switch

In lieu of a recent vehicle theft super close to home i've been trying to determine and create a means to interrupt either the fuel pump or the ignition.

Aside from having a manual trans (will likely only deter some) as a first means of theft deterrent i want to have a way to eliminate anyone from being able to start the truck.

A relay and accessory interrupting either the pump or ignition is what i've been considering.

The ignition will likely be easier. Using a relay and an accessory is my more favored route at this point.

1. Since i don't have power mirrors i was thinking of using that space to install that switch panel so it won't look out of place but am un sure if that is a good way to go since there are more wires involved on the back to get it to work correctly. However the switches are abundant and it would look clean.

2. Move the clutch switch on the pedal to a bank i've made on my fuse panel.
I've got a good amount of aux switches so just adding another likely wouldn't give its use away.

3. the traditional route to tap into maybe the AC or highbeams

12v remote trigger to have an additional key on myself and use RF to trigger it.

Seems like there likely won't be an easy route but i would rather make it complicated and work than come out to finding someone liked my truck so much they took it to mexico for themselves.

 

The fuel pump wire is right under the driver seat FYI. All that would take is splicing a high amp switch you could reach behind you for

 

Good to know. I would likely wire it to my panel so it looks like just another accessory. I want to give the potential thief the benefit of the doubt on being intelligent.
How many amps are we talking?

 

Myself I would break the ecm ground .

Get the ignition and fuel all in one .

Plus it is simple to work around if you have a hardware failure

Love the idea of wiring this in to a power mirror switch. Sub’d.

 

Right where it bolts fast to the engine depending if you have a 4 or 6 cylinder engine..

I have run a few of those grounds direct to the negative battery terminal.

you can use a relay that takes low current to energize the coil just get a constant duty relay.

one would need to really know these engines to spot anything different.

The mirror switch would work great with a relay.

I was actually thinking that might be a possible issue.

 

I'm also fairly sure there's multiple grounds and multiple power sources for it.. Not sure what the bolt is Biov is talking about, but that's just another body ground.

it comes down to how bad the OP wants to secure his truck.

To me resetting the ECM is no big deal.

I have a Master disconnect on the negative side of the battery that opens the circuit so all the electric is shut off when the truck is parked for a few days.

i was talking about the main ECM ground the 3 wires bundled below the data link connector on the left side of the engine.

 

Right but what I'm saying is you'd have to intercept all of them with that method

Does the truck have a clutch interlock switch?

If so, I'd think breaking one leg of that to a simple toggle squirreled away somewhere hard to see, easy (for you) to touch should do it.

My locker and that button are swapped.

Yeah i don't know about re setting my ecm every time i want to start it. Its a DD so that might not be a good option.
I think an interruption somewhere will be just as good. Any and all delays will make it more trouble for the would be thieves.

 

Do you have to push the clutch in to start the truck?

It is a 'feature' to prevent people from starting their vehicles in gear. Not sure when Toyota introduced that.

I generally don't park it in gear unless i'm on a hill. but interrupting or putting a switch between that or moving it was an idea.

 

Resetting the ECU is problematic in states that do inspections and expect all the monitors to be set- I wouldn't recommend it.

By far the easiest solution is to tap into the fuel pump wires and selectively cut power to that. Hide the switch however you wish. Keep in mind, that 99.9999999999999999999999999999999999% of the time, it's just going to stop you from starting it, so make sure it's easy for you to deal with.
