Hey all—I've seen this issue mentioned across various threads but I thought I'd start something specific to this issue.

I have a 2016 TRD OR Double Cab AT, 22k. Ever since I left the lot I've noticed that there seems to be two subtlety different engagement points for the break pedal, which corresponds to two (unfortunately) different brake modulation curves. One seems like the "normal" state and the other is twice as sensitive. This creates the tendency to randomly brake check my passengers and look like a complete amateur to other drivers.

This issue, though intermittent, hasn't gotten better or worse. It appears at pretty much any speed (though more pronounced < 35mph), and any temperature / time of day. Of course the dealership cannot reproduce.

Any of you out there experience something similar? Any advise, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I've noticed the same feeling slowing down when coming to stop there is almost like two curves of deceleration being applied through the process. I always thought it was the system paired with front disk and rear drums doing its thing to slow down. Lately Ive been thinking it could possibly be some type of engine braking occurring at the same time. Multiple times the truck had jerk almost and when I get to a complete stop my GF is staring at me like do you know how to drive? Every time I tell her it was the truck not me I swear.

This is the single best reason to pass on the OR model if you ask me. I have noticed it, just as described. I can generally pull off long gentle stops without incident. If I brake a little more aggressively I end up with an uneven stop (irritates me because I like smooth stops). I believe the fancy OR brake booster (crawl control) is very sensitive and it is reacting to subtle foot movements associated with the automatic downshifting. I believe this because if I kick the thing into neutral and stop more aggressively, I can stop smoothly as in any other vehicle.

A TSB for this would be nice...

I attributed the jerkyness to the transmission downshifting. I haven't kept an eye on the RPMs, but it feels like mine aggressively downshifts sometimes, which makes me feel like I am brake-checking the people behind me. Maybe I am talking about something a bit different than you though.

It is probably the brake booster on the OR. I'm lucky in that regard I don't have any issues with a smooth stop. My last car was an Acura TSX which had super touchy brakes.

If you think it is related to the transmission you could also try driving in ECT (which I do 100% of the time).

I need to try putting the truck in neutral and braking and see if it jerks. The OR brake boosters sounds like a reasonable culprit. The jerk doesn't bother me just makes the truck unique.

I think there is a similar but different issue with coming to a stop—where the AT downshifts abruptly. What I'm experiencing I think is just brakes + maybe the hydro brake-booster.

I will give it a shot.
What made me think the issues may be related was the comment about shifting into neutral and the jerkyness not happening.

I've only had the truck a couple weeks and have noticed this as well. Attributed it to coming from a small car (my avatar) but there definitely seems to be two curves for braking, resulting in some harsh stops.

    EDIT: 2017 OR 4x4

I know when I drive with ECT on my revs are held higher it is more reluctant to shift straight into 6th gear. It will hold 5th most of the time instead. I find this helps a lot with the issue at hand. Then again I just like the instant throttle response and so far my fuel economy is within 1-2 mpg. Some tanks are better some tanks are worse.

I too believe its the OR booster, they are super sensitive.

I HAD the same problem. I think I've gotten used to the braking issue without even thinking about it. No more brake-checking.
