Same as you, Op. I back in unless the parking is slanted. I used to suck at driving in reverse because I rarely ever did. So I decided I would start doing it one day. Now, I do it all the time.

 

I always back in at home. I have an '06 with no rearview camera. With a cap on the back, you're trying to look through 2 layers of tinted windows which, in the morning when it's still somewhat dark, makes it difficult to see. Even worse if there's condensation on the cap-windows, which there often is.
If you go nose-in, when you get in your vehicle, in the time it takes you to adjust the radio, send that last text message, adjust the temp, etc... someone out for a walk could have made their way down the street, and now they're right behind you. Or even worse, a little kid.
Plus I often use my tailgate as a workbench-of-sorts because it's right by the garage door.

 

Parking.....is a different world.

I learned to make a left turn into a head-in parking place. The left turn allows more space for the longer wheelbase. I rarely if ever make a right hand turn into a parking spot.

This was a lesson taught by a '71 Buick Electra 225, my college ride. That ride was bigger than most pickups. The door handles would span the width of a parking spot. OMG, the doors were about 6 feet long, many times the door would barely open enough to get out. With the wheels tight against the tire stop, the 225 was long enough to extend beyond any surrounding vehicle.

Typically, I head-in park because I need access to the tailgate to load the materials I just purchased.

 

I see people backing in not stopping until the tires hit the cement stop or fall off the pavement and overhang three feet into the grass, what about those that have to mow and weed wack... Those in a sports car pulling into a space and not stopping until the tires hit the cement stop all the while scraping their low slung spoiler...

 

I started backing in with my previous truck that had a large turning radius and no rear view camera. Before that I didn't really have experience with back in parking and my brother in law had to give me tips about it.

In our previous parking lot the street was really narrow due to cars parking at the curb in front of the parking spot.

That and other narrow lots, would sometimes require like 16 point turns to get out backing out.

It's funny how some areas issue tickets for it. One of our previous neighbors mentioned that they thought we were government workers because some agencies require cars to be parked by backing in. And it's been a while, like twenty years, since I've been there but there was a place with a busy nightlife in our area that required backing into the metered parking spaces.

But I'm kind of opposite of others where the main times that I do front end parking is when I need access to the bed to load/unload something. Or maybe if I'm in a crowded parking lot with a car right behind me. But other then that I mostly do back end parking.

btw OP, in regards to what you said about some people taking the spot if you go a few feet in front of it, sometimes when I do decide to back in in a crowded parking lot where people are fighting for spaces, I sometimes try to make my intentions clearly known by making sure to use signals (I usually do that anyways) but instead of going straight pass it, I immediately pull into an angle to get ready to go in and try to hit reverse as soon as possible, so they see the reverse lights. Sometimes you still have pricks that take the spot but usually people that see what you're trying to do gives you room and some people even reverse to give you more room.

 

I always look for pull-through parking locations. Even if that means I have to walk a little further to get to my destination.

• A) I still get to move forward on my way out.
• B) I get to avoid going backwards where visibility is limited - but it's all about C.
  
• C) Putting an AT from Drive to Reverse is the moment when it sees the most wear, so by not going from D to R, I'm "saving a shift" for future me.

 

Annnnnd backing in wins. Backing in just seems so much "safer"

 

Back OUT OF traffic, drive IN TO traffic. Simple really.

Hmmm. Parking. In front ways or back ways all depends on the girl.

 

I always back in...unless I'm in one of those parking garages that say "No backing in to stall". Which hasn't been an issue with the Taco but my old F150 caused me to block traffic while making my 20 point turn trying to back out a few times given how narrow the whole thing is.

I always back in, utilize the camera so it makes it easier to pull out of parking spaces, also park in the garage so with it being tight, its easier with a camera.

As always, pull out when necessary

 

That sounds nice, every time I park I back in, and by the time I swing out to position myself to back in the genius behind me is only a few feet away from my rear bumper. I can't tell you how many times I've had to give up on a spot and move on to something else because people follow too closely.

 

Exactly People suck

 

I do tree work and we work for the state highways/railways/Right if ways any how it’s company policy to only back vehicles in for the same reason too many accidents and what not

 

Its happened once or twice to me. I just sit there with reverse lights and turn signal until they back up and give me room.

I love it when that happens. I just continue on my merry way backing in, even if I'm inches away. Some car kept honking at me in a garage once cause she thought I was gonna hit her. I leaned out the window and said “I see you! Don’t worry, everything’s gonna be fine” I think it took her by surprise.
