Is it our fault that Toyota is falling behind? If we would demand the non-US versions of our rigs, this never would have happened!


I still believe that in 20 years the Tacoma will be the only one of these still on the road, but few folks keep there rigs for 20 years.

For me it's not so much that the Tacoma (and Frontier) will still be on the road in 20 years versus the others as I'd likely replace it before then, but it is that the Tacoma option is far less likely to break down in two years out in the middle of the sticks somewhere, and won't rattle like a bucket of bolts taking me there and back.

Yeah, there's some blemishes on the 3rd gens with all the electronics, engine, and trans. But I'm counting on it holding together and remaining reliable when it counts.....when I'm far from home and the nearest town. And not making me crazy with rattles and squeaks while it does it.

 

Just curious how you feel that Toyota is falling behind, is it because they put the vehicle manufacturers in alphabetic order and Toyota is last? Maybe they need to rebrand, Atoyot! Then they won't be behind anymore.

 

Toyotas in general never match up the the competition in specs. They are typically very conservative with performance and far behind the others when it comes to tech and comfort features.

The thing that none of these typical charts show are reliability and resale value which is why most people by toyotas to begin with.

Well, they used the TRD Pro and the FX4, so they're comparing the highest trim tacoma to the mid trims everywhere else. The Pro4X is comparable in features to the Off Road, other than the "Pro" name.

Tacoma has always been mid range for everything, but reliable.

3RD gen was kind of silly. Same chassis, same 4 banger, basically just a new set of sheet metal and lights. :\ I own one, but it was by far in a way not the most sensible decision for a mid size truck for me.

The 52k is probably a diesel zr2, tippity top trims. - Just looked at picture again, it's even higher, it's the Bison. That's way up there, 52k is right for it.

I don’t see it as falling behind, I see it as providing a vehicle that fits a market segment. That segment has proven that they love these trucks and their capabilities.

Do we need more torque, more payload, more towing? No, there are vehicles out there that people can buy that satisfies those needs while the Tacoma satisfies their segment.

Domestic vehicles have been having the full size truck power, payload and towing wars for a decade, now they’re doing it in the mid-size market. They are effectively removing themselves from the demographic that wants a truck like a Tacoma.

Would I complain about more capabilities? Maybe, maybe not? I tend to think I would because those increases would probably compromise the ride, drive, feel and look just so they can win a stat war with domestic mid-sized trucks.

 

What's funny is that journalists have been scoring these trucks for years now, and Tacos usually end up mid pack or bottom. Which truck always ends up selling the best?

The fx4 is the best you can get paired with the lariat. there's nothing better after that for off road spec unless they do come out with a raptor ranger.

 

I'm with you all the way, as I owned an 85 4x4 for 19 years and 590k miles. I'd just like to see Toyota be number one in every way(like they are abroad now)Like in the 80's~90's.

You can get the FX4 on the XLT trim though, which removes a lot of the creature comforts the lariat brings in. 35k looks like it's probably an XLT FX4. But as far as these ratings (tow, payload, etc) they'd be the same. Maybe driving comfort if they gave/docked points for leather? Otherwise, same trucks.

And the gladiator sport is the lowest trim. Rubicon is the highest, more comparable to the Bison/TRD Pro.

 

yeah thats cause bc likes their taxes. I think a pro is close to 60k otd here too. but then again a loaded half ton is near 80k sooo
