Has anyone had trouble smoging their trucks with a K&N CAI. My buddy was told his 2nd gen Tacoma wouldn't pass without the OE intake

Yeah there is a carbon trap in the factory intake that isn't there in the aftermarket ones. So they will most likely never be smog legal intake for the 05+.

If it's a true K&N product, then they will send you a CARB sticker to place under your hood so it can pass smog.

I just searched K&N's web site and didn't find a single cold-air intake set-up that they say is smog legal in CA. The filters are okay, but it appears that the CAI units are not. Looks like you will need to keep all the OEM parts and re-install before you go for a smog test.

PS: Looks like I might have missed something while searching. Hope it all works out for you.

my CAI came with the carb exempt sticker for the whole device, and i could swear that when we installed in2nite's intake on his second gen, it came with a CARB sticker too...

maybe he will chime in here...

    Found this on K&N site...

    50 STATE STREET LEGAL

Many K&N Intake Systems are street legal in all 50 states and include a California Air Resource Board (CARB) Executive Order (EO) number that ensures the kit has been tested to comply with emissions standards. EO numbers apply to the kit as well as the year, make and model it is being installed on. Systems with no EO number are street legal in most states but may not be used on emissions controlled vehicles in the state of California or other states adopting California emission standards. Use K&N's search by part to see which cold air intakes are CARB exempt for which vehicles.

So based on that, if the kit came with the sticker and EO number, than it should be good, right?

Will have to research the second gen tacoma kits and see if they have the EO number...

Well that stinks, stupid California smog laws are ridiculous. Maybe try contacting K&N and see if they might issue a CARB sticker since they were selling CAI before 2009.

Thanks for the feedback! Might just have to find a local mom and pop shop that'll hook it up if anything

Should be able to, its only failing based on a "Visual", it will still pass smog if all else is stock on the sniffer ad OBDII test.

I dont think you could get one for that particular setup since it removes the carbon filter which is a smog related so essentially your removing smog equipment.....I guess you could just get a random CARB/K&N sticker and the smog tech wouldnt know the difference.

K&N can't just issue CARB stickers for whatever they want. They must submit their product to CARB for testing and if it is approved CARB will issue an E.O. # for that product. If K&N were to send you a sticker to put on your truck that is equipped with an "illegal" intake, then it still wont pass if the smog tech actually looks up the E.O. # and it is for a different product

I had a honda with an illegal intake but took the carb sticker for a filter and stuck it under the hood. Most smog guys buy it unless they know the intake isn't carb legal.

But cummings6speed is right. Still not leagal

If you can get an EO sticker for a different product and get it passed, that is awesome. Just be aware that some smog guys might look up the EO number to match it to the product you have.

Morale of the story, CARB sucks
