Keyless remote replacement options?

I only got 1 back up remote for my keyless ignition and after seeing someone lock their pets in the vehicle while not running in 105* heat I opted to use the extra in a hide a key. We also rock climb and Mt bike in remotes area and could possibly lose the remote.
The dealer salesman said they are $380 to replace. Any more affordable options for replacements?

 

Do you have the push start keyless fob?

 

You should have got 2 fobs. Make the dealer get you another one no charge.

To clarify this is a TRD sport 4x4 which has a key entry for the door but uses a keyless start.

I got 2 total from the dealer 1 is the one I use, the other I put in the hide a key. I am looking to have a 3rd as a back up for my safe thus the inquiry in the OP to find a replacement at a much lower cost than getting it from the dealer.

 

O.k. A fob is the little black plastic thing on a keychain that has buttons and holds the metal key for emergency use if the battery in the fob is dead.
So if you got two of those from the dealer, that is correct.
And to clarify, you just said you have a Sport that has key entry and keyless start. You do know that you have smart entry on this truck don't you? You should not have to use a key to open the door.

 

@daddy_o no I did not know I have a smart entry can you explain so I can use it if needed?

 

I'm not sure if it's just that you're worried that you may accidentally lock the "keyless" key fob in the truck? If so, don't let that concern you... it's impossible to lock the truck if the keyless fob is inside.

 

Page 121 in your owners manual.
Basically you walk up to the truck with the fob in your pocket, touch the driver door handle and it unlocks. You never have to remove the fob or key from your pocket/purse. Same with locking the door upon exit.
Also, as said above, you do not have to worry about locking the fob in the truck, because the antenna will pick up the signal and think you are near the vehicle ready to open the door.
I highly suggest you read through the manual.
Have you been using the little metal key to unlock your door?

This also brings me to another question. Have you been putting the fob in the hide a key, and if so where have located the hide a key box, because you may have been leaving your truck open to anyone willing to take it.

 

@daddy_o Walking up to the truck and waiting for it to open there is a delay so I never use that. My fob has the lock unlock buttons.
The hide a key fob set up is tuck in the back by the bumper so it is not opening the door. No I do not use the key to open the door just to lock the tailgate.

Although I clip it off on a carabineer in my packs there is a possibility of **losing it** in the back country or out on a trail hence the purpose of this thread that seems to have been glossed over is in the event of losing the fob I would need a hide a key or fob because it has a keyless ignition.

 

Well..... there is a way to disable the power to your fob for long term storage or washing your truck. Or just removing the battery which takes 3 seconds.

You could consider trying to get just a copy of the key made, and keep your backup fob hidden in the truck deactivated. Have the spare key hidden in your hide a key, and your last key in the safe.

Then you would have multiple keys and a safe fob. If the event you do lose your fob then buy another.

I've ridden hundreds of times leaving my fob deactivated and tucked away in my truck without issue.

@Sedyn this truck does not have a key ignition so as I considered just putting the extra key in the hide a key but it cannot start the truck due to keyless ignition

Here is a question: AC is running you run in the store and leave it going due to 103* heat............can the dig lock himself in there with the fob in there? I would think so because you can lock the doors while riding in there.

I you run into the store with the fob in your pocket you can still leave the truck running. I'm not 100% sure without trying, but I think you could even lock the dig (dog?) in if you want to.

 

This is why an aftermarket solution like a Viper remote start and alarm is great. You can leave your vehicle running, bring your keys with you, and lock the vehicle. I'll be putting this system in my truck soon enough.
