Leaky front dif/axle

So, I came across this leak today when I changed my oil, anyboy else have this problem? Suggestions? Anything helps

Based on the mud I would first blast water on the seal, its not leaking much at all and dirt could have worked its way in their and it may not leak any more than it has. I would check the tightness of the cv into the axle shaft if its floppy call your Dealer about the "needle bearing TSB" they supposedly fix it for free, while they are in there make them do the seal.

 

Thanks for the help, quick question, why would the dealership supposedly fix it for free though? Is it a bad part or recall or something?

 

They would pull and replace the needle bearing in the carrier, I believe there is a tsb out on it. If you don't want to do that, then order up the ecgs bushing and the tools to pull it and install the bushing.

 

The bearing they used was supposedly undersized and prone to becoming a bit loose. They replace it with a longer bearing that holds up better and wont cause leaks. Like ^ he said the ECGS bushing is supposedly better than the new "larger" factory tsb bearing but I don't own a 2nd gen so I haven't done my research. But if you can get the dealer to fix it for free why not, I believe it only applies to the Driver side axle tube however.

 

I'd put the ECGS bushing in if I was replacing the seal. Had always had a little hum from the front differential on mine and put this bushing in when I changed a wheel bearing. No more hum and truck drives smooth as silk. Well worth the $60.00 and you can also get the seal from them also.

 

So I pressure washed the area the leak was from, cleaned off the oil, and am 2 days of driving to work and back... no leak, will keep an eye on it. It is on the passenger side and from what I have read, the bearing is different between the 2 sides, can anyone confirm that?

 

Yes the needle bearing is drivers side

 

Just got done replacing my needle bearing with ECGS bushing. Looking up all of the torque specs right now to bolt everything back up. If you do this... be careful of putting the new seal in (driver side). I bought a new one, and while installing it I royally f'ed it up. I'm going to have to run it and see if I leak any oil until I get the new seal (or two) in and replace it.
