My brother in-law leased a GMC truck in 2015 and was deployed over seas this year. While he was gone, the registration expired in January. The question is, it’s time to turn in his truck but does he need to get it registered(paying the late fee, obviously) before doing so? Or does that not matter?

^Shouldn't need to. The plate comes off the truck once the dealer takes possession anyway. Is he going to drive the truck to the dealer on expired plates?

The Dealership might hit him with whatever fees are owed.

If he didn't put the vehicle on Non Op, the dmv thinks its being driving and will rape his wallet accordingly.

Truck is already turned in. He paid $69(nice) for registration. Only have a $10 late fee in Ohio.
