OP lost his key, we're discussing making a key from a vin not just getting dup keys cut. That's where the prices vary.

Nice! I like having at least one all metal one cause I can carry it in my wallet in case of emergency.

I have one of those as well. I got this one hoping it would work with everything, but it struggles to unlock and lock the doors and really struggles to turn the ignition. Guess I need to have my lock cylinders and ignition cylinder rebuilt.

Sometimes you have to sand the new keys a little to match the worn locks. Some WD-40 helps too.

The keycode is stamped on the passenger side lock cylinder. (1st gens)
After pulling off panel trim its easied to take picture with a flash enabled cell phone.
Stamped code will be 10001-15000 . Just having the code can save you $30 when getting a key cut.
No security chips in use on 1st gens. Uses a TR47 blank straight metal key or plastic top around $0.63 - $2.75

Later gens the driver door cylinder is where code is stamped 50000 - 69999 (pushbutton may be different)
Cylinder removes by removing black circle cap on latch side of door panel.
Loosen torx bolt with torx 30. Plastic catch should prevent bolt from going awol.
    Cylinder pulls out.

    05-09 Toy44D D chip. Security enabled optional
10-15 Toy44G G chip. Security enabled optional but more often than not
16-19 Toy44H H chip. Only seen units with security enabled
20- Potentially a new H chip variation. That has already shown up on other Toyota models Toy50 with H chip

Toyota has split year issues, such as a 2010 could be a D or a G and this follows as they transition to new security chips.
A automotive locksmith can narrow this down as the newer keys need to be programmed/Learned to the unit.

I myself bought some uncut oem Toyota w logo TR47 bladed keys from Amazon and cut them from code.

Edit: try some silicone lubricant to loosen up the lock cylinders before seeking a rebuild.
You wouldn't believe the amount of grime and pocket lint from keys that build up in a cylinder.

Lost my 2021 Tacoma key blade that slides into the remote. Assuming I could just buy a blank blade online and have it cut at the local hardware store because the remote is what needs programing but can anyone confirm this?

Did these originally come in all metal or with the black plastic grip?
