You said yours is a TRD auto, it shouldn't have an ignition cylinder. The only TRD's that have ignition lock cylinders are TRD manuals.

No idea on the how to. I go back to work on Monday. If I can remember to I'll look and see if there is a TSB pertaining to this.

ok, awesome. I was kinda worried and parked my truck inside the fence for tonight. I never really tried opening the doors with that key but if I remember correctly it was only for the tailgate. As far as the how to, any help is appreciated. Thank you

It's ok. After re-reading the thread, someone previously mentioned that they were able to get a key through the vin. I might on Monday just call that same dealership in Minnesota and ask if that same guy is working there. You never know, he may be lol

It's definitely a start though. Maybe someone who had a similar problem with the 2016 can reconfirm

I have a 16 Sport I bought used, no tailgate key. Went to the parts desk at the dealer and asked if I could get one made. They looked up the vin and gave me 2 keys.

Nice! With all that happening, did you show proof of ownership? Title and license?

My local dealerships gave me problems with producing a key so I'm wondering how I would go about this if I called a different area. Hmmmm.

I don't understand what their problem is. Are you doing this over the phone? If so, I'd recommend actually walking in and talking to someone at the parts counter. Maybe if you're standing in front of them they'll feel more obligated to help. And if not, ask for a manager. There's no reason this can't be done.
I can't remember if it took a day or so to get it done though. Seems like they had to get in touch with Toyota Corporate to verify the vin, once that was done they cut the keys and called me back.

You are right. I did do this over the phone yesterday right after I got out of work. The reason for calling them was because I wasn't in close proximity to where they were located and they were close to closing. With all the helpful feedback I've gotten here, I will head over there tomorrow Monday since I'm off.

Hey everyone. I'm here at toyota as I type in this message. The parts guy understood what everyone said on here and has been very helpful. He says in 20 minutes he should know if there were two separate key codes for the 2016. If there are as everyone has said (I know everyone here is right) he will be able to simply cut the key for me. I'll post up in a few.

I had the dealer rekey the tailgate. Mine was certified used and I was pissed when I found out the fob doesn’t work in the tailgate and there was no tailgate key upon purchase
