Manual Hub Conversion?

Does the dash light specifically say ABS? I just went outside and put the keys in and there definitely no ABS light.

 

Yeah it does. Right in the bottom middle of my dash on my 4Runner. If you put the locker in the abs shuts off so it's the easiest to tell besides looking at the side of your spindle for the plug.

 

Yes it is , thinking about it myself. I heard you get a little better mpg ??? Less moving parts so less wear on the front end ??? What I heard , looking into it.

It is a common misconception that the hubs on ADD truck lock and unlock. They don't actually. ADD represent Automatic Disconnect Differential. This is what locks and unlocks, not the actual hubs like on a manual hub setup.

If you are experiencing difficulties with the front wheels engaging when you shift into 4WD, it is likely the mechanism the engages the diff. @DJB1 made reference to the "ADD motor" in post #4 of this thread.

I was somewhat wrong on that, the fork stays attached to the ADD actuator motor, and it's a sliding collar that you have to lock into place with a hose clamp. These threads show what it looks like when you remove the ADD actuator:

Dont know about better mpg's, but prolly a little since all that shit isn't spinning constantly and using up component's that dont spin on manual hub models (until 4wd is engaged). The biggie i think is the cv boots! Seems the guys with fairly big lifts can sometimes really have problems eating them up because of the constant rotation. With manual hubs those axles are rarely spinning and when they are spinning its usually at slower speeds. When i was looking for my trucks getting manual hubs was high on the list because of this issue and the reliability end of things too(not relying on a switch for 4wd), less electronics the better as far as im concerned plus ya get the j style transfer shifter...(with factory configured manual hubs of course)

 

I miss my first gen and still roam through. Should have kept that truck

Narrower, had a metal bed, better built, and for some reason I loved that little grill.

 

If you have abs I would keep it. I found the manual fronts off a "low milage" rig but figured new bearings would be good, so I got extra abs spindles and did a rebuild/convert to manual including tundra back splash plates with abs. With a press it was straightforward. Glad I did because the low mile manual hub bearings were tost.
I swapped on my 94 and milage jumped 2mpg. I have been keeping track on my 04 so when I swap it to manual I will know, but I'm sure it will jump up 1-2mpg. If it makes a difference on a f350 it should also work on the tacoma

 

I have 4x4 Warn manual hubs on my 2000 Tacoma. I have been considering ditching my whole front 4x4 driveline them along with my Total Chaos LT kit and extended axles to make the truck 2wd. I have gusseted spindles as well. The bearings are new as are the extended wheel studs. Is anyone interested in something like that?

 

I'm sure you would sell that stuff in no time at all if you put it in the 1st gen classifieds.

 

Sell it and make someone desperate for 4WD lucky!! It's hard to find a decent 4wd Tacoma. Just sell yours for a PreRunner if you don't want 4wd.

 

I have way too much fabrication work into my truck into my truck to do that. I will probably throw a feeler thread up in the 1st Gen classifieds.

 

When I swiched mine to manual hubs , I also put it all into the ABS spindles. The abs is disabled although . It's there for future use I guess. I left the add axle intact ,so I could turn the 4x4 on and off in the truck when the hubs are locked. I don't notice any better mpg though. If your rig has a 3"+ lift you'll save a bundle on cv axles for sure .
