manual shift knob?

If I'm not mistaken, the grey TRD one is the best, right?
And only $45. OEM. With a pattern on it so if someone else drives not familiar with it, they can look where the gears are.

One problem. It's grey. That's kind of cool. But also kind of ugly.
I don't know why it's grey. No other shift knob is grey.
Black is classic. So is white. They stand out against the interior rather than blend in with it to let you know, "This is the shift knob"

Has anyone painted theirs? Is it possible?
I don't know how you'd mask off the TRD logo to avoid painting over it.
Or a good way to sand/prep/paint because despite it being weird/gray, it's still durable.
I saw a black one before, guy said it's another OEM part that is rare for the same price. But I can never actually find one for sale
There's liquid masking tape applied with a paint brush, not sure if that would work. Called Maskol or something.

Curious to know if anyone has figured out how to get this thing looking like a normal shift knob in most vehicles, and not some bland thing color matching the sunvisor

 

Look at sickspeed offerings. I got a glow in the dark one I’m happy with.

I’ve never heard of someone trying to paint a shift knob. It wound need to be some super paint that doesn’t wear off. Maybe fingernail polish.

 

Any 12x1.25 should work.

 

Fortunately this is a very common size. Unfortunately for me, I got the hurst core short shifter which uses 3/8-16, very uncommon.

 

Here is the one I got from sickspeed. Works really well. I wish it had a little more weight to it, but it still feels solid. I think I'll end up making a lead plug to thread into the unused threads towards the middle but for now I really like it.

I would never try to paint a shift knob. It'll just wear off and make a mess

Have your own custom made, laser etched knob made. Tag frames too.

He's done a shift knob for me and a few different tag frames. 2 of the tag frames are almost 20 years old and still look great.

And is that an FJ box installed? What boot did you use?

 

I have a Core short shifter so a hurst stick with a 3/8 16 plain mild steel knob, I scuffed it up and painted it with about 4-5 coats of VHT wrinkle high temp "valve cover" black paint, it's held up really well for about a year now, it's not quite as grippy as it once was but still looks good and has a better texture than just smooth, if it ever starts to wear through or get slippy again I'll just hit it over a weekend with some more VHT.

Best picture I have of the knob right now, you can see I put a sticker under the shifter with the pattern on it so the porters and techs that drive it when I have to take it in for alignments and tires, (the only things I can't do myself) and have to let someone else drive my truck don't take off into the car behind them in reverse.

 

I like this idea. I might do it to mine. Maybe bed liner paint, which I think can be got in spray cans.

 

Careful with the bed liner paint, I had some (Rust-Oleum) that I did a rear bumper with and while the first two cans were fine whatever the second two smelled like gear oil soaked burnt popcorn and it lingered for a few weeks.

Definitely wouldn't want that inside my truck.

But yeah that was another consideration I had was run down the the local Line-X and have the hit it for me for a couple bucks while they were doing a bed or something.

So far this has been working for me.

For what it's worth most bedliners are polyurethane based IIRC I believe the VHT is epoxy based.

 

They sell a $15 fake trd one on eBay. Worked for me I just made sure I bought a locking nut and washer to tighten it properly.

The only thing I don’t like about aftermarket knobs is the gap between the knob and the boot. Anyone know of any that also fill in that space?

 

You can get a retainer that cleans up the look. Here is what I got on Amazon and it turned out looking very clean.

 

for my TRD one I still have the stock boot with the chrome painted plastic collar

i imagine other car or custom boot parts might fit given that boots are simply a cut of leather stitched together and stapled to the base frame.

there’s a guy who 3D prints a new collar for the 3rd gen which IDK if it fits. It might. I’m gonna ask if I can mail him my boot for measurements to R&D a 2nd gen one
