This is similar to a couple threads I found, but I think different enough for its own thread.

My 04 SR5 said it was 7 miles to empty when I filled up last night. Accordning to the pump, I put in 15.1 gallons.

That means I should have had ~60 miles left, not 7.

    Anyone else experiance this?

I'd rather drive my truck to the gas station at 0 miles to empty, than walk to the station.

Small lift, slightly oversized tires, well...
They leave a 'reserve' so that there is still fuel in the tank to help keep the pump cooled. The fuel pump life will be shortened if you run that low often.

    Once if you're smart.
    Multiple if you're dumb.

Or about 3.41 times, if you are a member of TW.
I did the math, we're dumb bunch here on TW. (me included)

My Tacoma is old enough that it doesn't have that feature. The other SUV and Truck in the driveway do. I look at it occasionally just for the entertainment factor but find that feature to be useless.

The DTE calculations are based on the fuel mileage you got over the LAST few miles you drove, and the ESTIMATE of fuel left in the tank. I've seen MPG's vary from 4 MPG to 40 MPG over short distances. The vehicles have no way to predict what type of fuel mileage you will get for the next 50 miles.

If you drive or park on a steep incline all the fuel moves to either the front or rear of the tank depending on which way you're going. The fuel gauge THINKS you have a lot less fuel than you have. I've driven my F150 up Pikes Peak and MT, Washington. My truck has a 36 gallon tank and it was roughly 1/2 full both times. Both times the fuel gauge showed "E", the low fuel warning light came on and I got "0" miles to empty by the time I got to the summit. With roughly 18 gallons in the tank. It was only after I got back to level ground for 10-15 miles before anything started to register normally.

It’s almost like Toyota wanted you to know you have a 18.2 gallon tank.
