As long as we keep buying them, they’ll keep building frames that rust easily. Btw, they’re not the only ones. Frame rust keeps the truck market alive, even in the aluminum body Fords.

My service department is starting to work on fulfilling this. My appointment is on Friday. I'm told they are not coating the exterior as some have experienced (including me) in the past, this is an internal frame application, i.e. they are spraying/blowing it to the interior of the frame assembly. Drop it off in the afternoon, they provide a rental, and I pick it up 24 hours later.

I wont be buying anymore new cars or trucks.
The prices have reached the point where they don't make any sense to own anymore. They are a disposable commodity and you are expected to pay $40000 + for something that is going to rust, wear out, break down and then nickel and dime you to death once the warranties expire. To make it worse people have come to expect that they have to have a new car with all the latest tech stuff on them which only drives the prices even higher. This crap with the Tacoma frames has finished me off.
I am fortunate that I restore old cars as a hobby and plan to pick up a couple clean 73-90 model cars to restore and drive as daily drivers in the future. They still turn up here and there and most are still cheap and easy to work on. My brother in law picked up a 89 New Yorker a couple years ago with 12000 miles on it at an estate sale for $1600. It was a grandma car. He loves it. My brother and other brother in law wont waste their money buying new cars anymore either. They just keep the ones they got running even though they both can afford to buy new.

Is it really an automaker's fault that metal rusts after years of being exposed to water and salt year after year? There are so many nooks and crannies in undercarriages I believe it's impossible, for a normal driver that never fluid films, to stop it.

You will be sorry. It's a mess and does not work. They put that crap on my 2005trd and it still rotted and it was a black mess anytime I went under to do some work. I will never let them touch my frame. Just keep loading on the fluid film / woolwax every late fall before salt is dropped and douche it every spring after the first heavy rain washes the salt away.

I'm told this new application is not the one you speak of (I had it done as well), but is an "interior" application that is blown into the frame, as opposed to coating from the outside. For the record, I had no problem with the "mess" you describe anyway. Just wanted to clarify what Toyota Service explained to me.

Never trust a dealer. They are getting paid to do it by corporate. We have an open frame except up front. There are a ton of plugs. Better off pulling a plug and filling with woolwax, cavity wax, oil, or whatever you prefer. Look at my avatar. I have been there and done that. Car dealers all SUCK

I too received this letter here in Sacramento. CA. My frame doesn’t look horrid yet, but I don’t want issues down the road.

What is the best sealant/anti rust spray to use?

Also there is a platic plug looking thing on the rear of the boxed section. Just under where the door meets front fender. Looks like it's meant to put a hose in to wash out the inside of box. Then on underside of same is a plug to allow water and dirt to come out but prevent dirt from getting in

I’m gonna do what the dealer suggests. They service it so they can deal with the mess. If I don’t they probably won’t replace the frame if it ever rots out.

SSO hybrid bumper, Warn winch, RCI skid trilogy, RRW sliders, everything in the cheap/free mods thread, and of course the frame recall work.
Mine gets dropped of on January 6 and I pick it up on January 7. I'll post to tell you what it looks like.

If you don't get the treatment, you don't get the extended warranty. I've used fluid film since my truck was new and will continue to apply it after Toyota does their treatment. I don't believe that there is a one and done product based on my experience.

Got the letters too...I guess this is another hazard when heavily modifying your vehicle. Thankfully part of my mods included rustproofing.

Think i will take it in for sh*ts and giggles.

It's the automakers fault that they don't use a grade of steel that is more resistant to corrosion, box the frame, or apply a coating at the factory that would mitigate the problem. We've known about the affects of, and solutions to, road salt for what 50+ years?

I have wondered many times why the frames are not hot-galvanized like the cell towers/electric poles/fence posts.
Build the frame, drill and weld all you need on it, and dip it in a tub of hot-galvanized solution. Paint it after that. It will last a lot longer than the just painted frames.

confused why this doesnt consider the 18, 19 and 20 models. Didnt the 3rd gen start in 2016? If so, was there some kind of substantial frame difference/upgrade/change that would make post 17 tacomas in salt states any LESS susceptible to corrosion ?
