I don't believe that you guys got 5hp from a muffler. I could believe a full exhaust giving you that but not a muffler. A muffler is just for sound.

chris has done a lot of testing and dynos so i believe him when he says he got a 5HP boost, which is a lot for just a muffler, but the Dynomax are supposed to be the best, i may get one to replace my flowmaster but i love the sound so much haha

Well if you consider how a major carmaker would eliminate sound within a "budget" you can imagine what kind of restriction they are imposing to keep a car quiet enough for that majority of the population. just like an intake tube, if you replace all the bends and in some cases baffles, you have let loose some hidden hp but also some new sounds. my .02

This was for my SC'd Prelude, 3" in/out, but I think it's relevant to show how restrictive the Dynomax Turbo is....

    Dynomax Turbo (#17792) 5.5 x 11 x 16 inches, offset in/out config...

^^^exhaust gas hits the back wall and gets forced into the next perf. tube, then repeats
the same going the opposite direction, then swings back one more time for its final path out.
Terrible inside welds, horrible merges, cheap materials.

^^^staight thru design and was just as quiet as the Dynomax, but sounded 10 times better.

If I replace my factory muffler, it will be with the longest, fattest straight thru Magnaflow I can find.

that is very similar to my jardine which is made by doug thorley. if you get the jardine and the header combo you will really see a difference. they are specially designed to be coupled together.

whether the dynomax is restrictive or not, it is dyno proven on our truck

that just means it's less restrictive than the factory one. A straight thru design will perform better.

In theory, once I see dyno results that beat the dynomax (which is the top performer) I'll believe it

well again, our trucks are designed to scavenge the exhaust, not eliminate toal backpressure. unless, your gonna s/C or turbo then having a scavenging type exhaust is what you need. you dont need something thats gonna make you lose total backpressure.

I'm new here and don't want to be so disagreeable, but...
there is no scavenging effect that far back. After the header collector merge, its all about getting the exhaust out without restriction. That's not to say velocity isn't important..it IS. But no amount of backpressure is good, whether NA or FI.

^^ very true. but as far as i know, if you get a header, it will ease restriction on the engine. it wil allow you to lower rpms some and push out more power in the lower power band. also it will depend on your driving habits as well

    totally agree :)

the primaries on the stock header look very small. I bet the gains would be across the entire power band. btw, I love this motor...its damn strong.

I agree. The Doug thorely long tubes are not too impressive. I might try a tri y set up down the road

Where is the thread with all these dyno numbers with different mufflers? and is this magnaflow on there? im really curious of how these match up, and if these would be any better or worse with the dt header, i just ordered mine, and i am very curious at my next step towrds a performance muffler

so the combo with the jardine and the DT shortys screwed up your power band? wow, i would have thought that the jardine and the DT headers would have improved HP and torques

The results are kind of spread around. Chris4x4 did all his private testing on his own. He ran 3 dyno runs per muffler and averaged the results. Earlier in this thread he said:

But last night we discussed it again: http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/pe...yone-have-dynomax-ss-cat-back.html#post913593

Arn't you comparing apples to oranges though? He tested his on a V6 and only got 5hp... that doesn't necessarily mean that we'll get the same with the 2.7 (I would guess even just based on percentages)
