Hey there, brand new (to me) Toyota owner. Picked up a 2016 Tacoma SR5 with about 89000 miles a couple months ago with no codes. Trying everything out I tried out ECT power and shortly after got a code for my MAF sensor. Bought an OEM one and cleared the codes but it shortly came back on followed with the codes P0171,P0174, and P1170. I cleaned the throttle body and checked my purge valve so far but I’m not that mechanically inclined so any advice is greatly appreciated. The only modification is a K&N (not KNC, Whoops) air filter which has been on since the purchase of the truck. Thank you!

I’m now sitting around 90700 miles, tried clearing codes multiple times in between then and now and no such luck. I don’t have access to the oem air filter because the person I bought it from no longer had it but i could try it

Have you tried removing the filter and putting on the oem back???

sorry man my original comment didn’t make sense after I reread your post. I would drop in a paper filter if you haven’t already and throw away the K&N.
My only other thought is a tank of bad gas if the truck is throwing air/fuel mixture issue codes

All good, just been fighting this for a while trying to figure out what in the world is going on but I guess I’ll order one tomorrow and see what results come from it.

The oil from K&N filters can cause issues if there is too much and it gets into places it shouldn’t be. Results may vary, hope you get it solved man

I have tried to change the oil on it and probably put too much on it, not sure though as it was the first time I did it. Anyway tips to clean any excess out?

wipe everything past it down with a paper towel then use more paper towels to soak up any excess. It’s easy to over oil K&N filters without even knowing. That will remove excess and may help

It’s bank 1 and 2 lean, maf sensor circuit error, and fuel performance/injector

try disconnecting the battery for a few minutes, shot in the dark.

were you informed when gassing up these 3rd gens when the nozzle clicks off, stop, don't try and add more, it mucks something up.

any electrical mods done by previous owner?

I’ve also tried that multiple times to no avail, and no I’ve never been told that but I also thought that was a general rule for all vehicles so I’ve never done it. No electrical mods to my knowledge done. It was owned by an older gentleman before me so I doubt there was anything extensive done to it

Stock wheels and suspension. Random "utilitarian" mods featured on this great forum.
Have you checked for rodent damage (chewed wires)? Try to follow the harness and check nooks where a mouse or squirrel could hide in. This can cause major issues depending on what has been chewed.

Other possibility is the fuel pump (in tank). You'd need to get hands on a decent scantool or better yet Techstream to see what pressure you see.

Check your intake system for loose clamps or intake holes with a hole in it. With the ignition off, you can try hosing the Maf with maf cleaner or electrical cleaner. Don't use brake clean, you'll ruin the sensor.

After that I would say you need a wiring diagram.

The fuel trim lean codes are basically symptoms of the problem meaning the computer can't add enough fuel for what it perceives as too much air.

What exactly is the P1170 code meaning for your year Tacoma? It can't mean both a maf circuit issue and fuel system problem... that would lead a guy in two different directions. I feel it's maybe a high/low pressure fuel system code because other wise there would be a standardized code for either the maf of fuel system. Reason for my prediction is the dual fuel injection system on Toyota's isn't the norm so I doubt there is a standardized code for it. Without knowing what the code actually means though everything we're saying is a guess.

P1xx codes are not standardized. They are manufacturer specific and sometimes the meaning changes depending on the model or year.

Maybe a Toyota Tech will appear from the wilderness to help here

I agree with the above post. Need to check that you don't have a vacuum leak creating these lean issues. Because they are affecting both banks, it is likely not a AF sensor. Also, check fuel pump pressure/performance.

That K&N is the root of all your problems. See it so many times. Throw that in the garbage.
