This is my son' '98 4Runner. The video is terrible, but I think you just see the AC compressor wobbling around. When the AC is on it sounds terrible and the compressor wobbles. When the AC is off it sounds fine and there is no wobble. It looks to me like the belt jumped a groove towards the engine and then peeled that edge off.

I cut the belt off and wiggled stuff around. The clutch feels good. The pulley wiggles like crazy. I guess the bearings are shot. Is this a new compressor or can the pully and bearings be replaced?

Well, the fargin iceholes at Rock Auto sent me the wrong part. The pulley in the kit they sent is larger than the one I took off the truck. Makes it impossible to get the AC belt back on. Witness:

However, I think I need a new compressor anyway. The lip that forms the retaining wall for the snap ring that holds the pulley on there appears to halfway self-destructed. What say you? Is this a new compressor in my future?

Just buy a new compressor, OEM if you can swing it.

Is that a job I can do? Seems like there might be . . . leakage.

It's not all that hard. I just replaced mine along with every other AC component. First go to a shop and have the refrigerant removed. Then take the old one off, put the new one back on and take it back to a shop and have them pull a vaccum and recharge it. You can also rent the vaccum pump and guages from autozone or something. I was going to do that but I also replaced my timing belt at the same time as all the AC stuff. I was pretty over it at that point and just a paid a shop to finish it off.

You can buy complete o-ring kits for the AC system for pretty cheap if you do have a leak. You have a bad bearing on your compressor, it doesn't sound like you have locked the thing up... If you have, then you will have to purge the system with either denatured alcohol or acetone to clean up the expansion valve.

This job really isn't terrible. You will probably have to remove your power steering pump and skin your knuckles as you remove the compressor, but it's not too difficult. I would STRONGLY suggest that you replace your AC drier canister when you do this job ($20), then take it to a shop to have the system purged and refilled...This may cost up to $150, unless you have gauges and an air compressor.

Where is the drier canister? I mean, where under the hood is this thing? What's it look like?

Edit: Nevermind. I googled. Looks easy enough. I'll call my currently favored garage and see if they'll do the evacuation and recharge of the freon.

    Thanks

I have to get some compressor oil. The type of oil depends on whether the compressor is a "Reciprocating Swash Plate" or a "Rotary Through Vane". I can't find any documentation about the compressor that says which it is. Do y'all know?
