Newbie needs wheel help

Got my 1st taco (2001 4x4) 2 weeks ago....has 16 inch steel wheels.....will old 4runner alloys 15 inch (1990-1995) fit without issues???

PS..I do realize that I will have to increase my tire size (height) for speedo, gearing etc

No....figured it out on my own...funny you brought this up Boxrocket as this was one of my first posts ever on TW!!

Running my summer tires on them after I sandblasted and painted them




Loving the OME susp...on since October...glad you suggested the 881s

Only trouble is the dakars will not settle with the D6XLs on....carrying 4 patio stones around and the ride is great but when I take them out the rear goes up 1.5 inches and choppy ride

I guess I'll start carrying some gear around to weigh her down instead of the patio stones

Put a load of wood on yesterday and she handled great!

Thanks for the response on the wheels. As for the Dakars, have you tried pulling the AAL out? You might see how it handles a load without the AAL. I'm sure you could sell the extra leaf easily if it's better without.

 

I am thinking of taking the AAL's out and will keep them if she sags a few years down the road.

Might try pulling them out myself but not sure how difficult that will be since I did not do the install myself.

 

Thanks for the pics. I was thinking of running old school 4Runner wheels on a 99 and I wanted to see how they looked.

 

Pulling the leaf out is pretty easy. If you know how to install a leaf pack you can do it.

1: Support the rear of the truck on jack stands
2: remove rear wheels
3: use floor jack under rear diff to take load off the rear springs and unbolt the lower shackle bolt, and remove ubolts.
4: drop the springs out of the shackle (leave the front of the springs attached)
5: you might need to remove the spring clamp bolts to get the leaves to separate enough
6: remove the spring center pin (all the leaves will separate but the clamps should keep them mostly in alignment)
7: pull the AAL out of the spring pack (it should be the third from the top and the only one without teflon pads)
8: use some C-clamps or something similar to squeeze the leaves back together and reinstall the center pin. Don't overtighten, it can strip the threads easily.
9: reattach rear of spring to the shackle
10: use floor jack to raise axle back into place and make sure springs are seated correctly on spring perches with the center pin in the spring perch hole.
11: reinstall ubolts.

DONE.

You might need to remove your lower shock bolts to get the axle to drop far enough. be careful not to overextend your rear brake line when you lower the axle from under the springs.

I just might attempt this and do have extended brake lines in place so this should be less of a concern, also have installed a BPV fabbed by my mechanic on the intitial install.
