No More Chrome!

Great Idea! looks nice!

 

We had some hurculiner left over from coating our enclosed trailer that we got at pep boys. I just masked off the area and used a disposable paint brush to brush on the liner. As long as you stir it well before use, it will make the texture on its own.

great job bro! i want to do this, but the previous owner hit both front and rear bumpers, sooo i gotta look for "best" shape ones first. haha

anyways, i dont know if you saw my thread i posted with pictures, should be somewhere here on the first page, but i lined my whole rear bumper. you can the get the herculiner simply at autozone, they stock it. and like he said just get a few brushes, BE SURE TO WEAR GLOVES, because a week later my hands are still covered in it. i simply just took off my bumper caps/covers, and sanded everything that was chrome (my original rear bumper is suppose to be red, color matched, but i got hit and found a chrome bumper for cheap on craigslist) then i went at it with liner. to apply the stuff(there are directions) you just dab it on there and kinda like go over the dabs. and just keep doing that, its very easy to get the hang of it.

and to the OP, your truck looks sharp, but i have a question. what made you go black instead of color matching? it does look good as is, but just curiuos...keep up the good work.

Very good job! That Huculiner is a great idea.

 

To everyone else, this is the method of applying herculiner. Also, I only waited about 5 minutes after applying to peel the masking tape off because then it doesn't have to split the herculiner at the tape line when dry, possibly causing it to peel up.

I decided not to color match because I already have my wheels painted black and white doesn't look very good color matched on the first gens imo.

 

i personally think the white looks pretty good color matched, but the way you did your truck w/ black wheels and the freshly painted black grille/bumper etc looks pretty good. you got plans to lift?

 

Not for a while, Im just a poor college student so all my money goes to other things. Definitely in the future though.

 

how to you remove the plastic cab on the rear bumper? Just pull up?

my rear bumper was hit in a minor accident. Right by the step. As a result, the top of the step have a couple of cracks and rusty streaks would leak out of these cracks when the bumper gets wet. I wonder if I prime over the crack (in essence sealing them) and then paint over it, would that resolve the leaking rust issue?

 

It is very easy to remove. If you look under the inside of the bumper, you see little plastic clips. You just have to squeeze these together with your fingers and pull up on the plastic cap. It comes off in 2 pieces.

As for the paint, just make sure you rough up the chrome and use a self etching primer which can be found at any auto parts store.

Did you remove the bumper? or just taped up the tailgate?

I've also been contemplating of buying a new chrome bumper.. so either paint the one I have now to cover up the rust issue (the dent is not that big of a deal for me) or get a new bumper that's chrome.

 

I just masked it off. It is easy enough on the rear bumper.

If you buy a new one, I would just get a painted one off ebay that way you don't have to paint it.

 

That heculiner coating you have, when you step on it, are the bumps rock hard? Or are they being moved around with each step?

 

It is very solid. I guess the best I can describe it is its a little harder than tire rubber.

 

oh ok so it does nudge around a bit in a rubbery type of way and always bounces back? but not tar-like where your step can shift the texture permanently?

Did you do your bed with herculiner as well?

 

No, it has the plasic drop in liner. I know there is a member on here who did though. I just can't remember his name.

 

Hey how difficult was it to remove the front bumper? How did you support the bumper after removing the bolts?

I just realized my truck under the previous owner had a fender bender accident. The contact was directly above the passenger side turn signal. As a result on the passenger side, the bumper is pushed in slightlight and on the driver side the bumper is pushed out slightly. I want to see if I can re-seat the bumper..

 

Its really easy. I ended up removing the brackets completely to make it easier (4 bolts per side). The bumper is not very heavy. The hard part for me was putting it back on by myself because you have to have the brackets mounted on the bumper then hook the brackets onto the truck. (you'll understand when you do it).

 

i need to get rid of my chrome soooo bad....
