Not Enough...

The box on the first post is custom made, and i've had this amp hooked up to numerous subs, and all of the hit pretty hard. I am kind of unsure which to get, either 2 ohm or 4 ohm sub, the 2 ohm would hit harder, correct?

 

Oh, pardon my misunderstanding. It looks exactly like the per made ones available for our trucks.

One suggestion I can make to improve is that subs should have shared air space whenever possible. It makes for a more "mono" sub channel which is what you want.

Not just from a standpoint of reliability, do I discredit that amplifier. I'd also wager that it doesn't come close to it's rated output. Not without compromising signal quality, at least. Hi Fonics does not make very robust products anymore, and that's putting it nicely.

And impedance has very little to do with actual sub woofer performance. The final impedance of your sub woofer system is important to pair up with what your amplifier wants. I would recommend a 2 ohm load for most car audio mono amps. This would be achieved by wiring two 4 ohm woofers in parallel.

 

To get the most power out of that amp it needs to be ran at 1 ohm. This is also most likely why your other setups felt or sounded louder( ignoring other factors)

So, if your buying new subs, get 2 d4 ohm vc sub, or 2 2ohm single

 

Lol, I didn't think those amps were 1 ohm stable. But yeah, if you can run it at 1 ohm, then that's your best bet for increased output.

May be too late to chime in here, but your problem isnt your subs, or your power, its the tiny amount of sq. ft. of the box you made. Put the amp under your driver seat, and build the box so the subs use the full width of the truck to get as much air space as possible. That will turn your system around

Ive always understood you cant fit a 15 back there, its not deep enough. and even if you got it to physically fit you would have an even worse problem with airspace because a 15 requires a ton of airspace to sound right. The box is the most important part of your stereo

I have 1 12" ported that sounds pretty good.... good luck with it!

 

I have yet to figure out what i am going to do with it. 1 10" sub only requires .6 sq. ft. of space. I thought about doing what you're saying about the full box across the back and doing 3 10" Kicker or JL W1's.... what are you running component wise in your truck?

 

OH i didnt see that you have 10's. Youre closer to where you should be, but i bet you are still under the recommended .6 cu ft.

I knew i had to be ported.... that was for sure. I was gonna build my own box but ended up taking the easy route and buying a ********* 12" ported box with 12" ID sub. then i powered the whole system with an Alpine PDX 5 channel amp that lives under my driver seat.

I believe that one sub with the right air space will hit harder and sound better than two that are lacking air space.

 

I was at an audio store yesterday, and the guy demo'd 2 10" hertz that hit pretty dang hard for what they were, and were only being powered by a 600.1 amp. I came from a cadillac CTS with 4 15" MOMOs powered by 18,000 watts.

 

a 3cf net box is very much possible behind the seat and only requires a 2 min mod to do it and you have around 6-6.5 inches of mounting depth to boot which is perfect for a nice 12 that can take over 2kw of power.

 

Been wanting to try a pair of the Sundown SD-3 10". Specs say they work best in a .5 cube sealed box. 500W RMS

I had a single Sundown SD3 10 in my old truck and it was impressive. I could only imagine two of them. The SD3 12 is about to be released, but I'm thinking about holding out for the SD3 8 or just go IDQ 8's. You won't be disappointed with the Sundown.

 

I am getting older and thought I may only do one but I love bass. It comes down whether or not I can sacrifice the space.

 

After importing that sucker its gonna cost you a pretty penny.

 

Thanks for the advice guys, went with 2 Alpine SWS-10D2. Fairly inexpensive at 500 watts RMS. They sound pretty good.

 

JL's are good if you are willing to pay a lot extra for the letters "JL".

 

I had 2 JL dub 1's in there, and they didn't sound nearly as good as these Alpines.

 

JL's are good. Period.

He's obviously not looking in the price range of their w6 or Slash V3 line ups, but their entry level stuff is affordable and I'd say it's price point is dead on for what you're getting.

 

Every brand has their good and bad. I get a smoking deal on Alpine but its not my go to brand. Nothing wrong with JL's as they make solid equipment. Just with JL you are paying for that name.
