OEM camera install issues

Ok, I have done hours and hours of research on this topic and I know there are a whole bunch of threads on it but nothing has helped me thus far.

I have a 2008 with no camera, mirror display, or wiring. I installed a 2013 touch screen.

I have located the reverse signal and attached it to pin 2 in the 28 pin R15 harness.

I connect the 4 wires of the camera to the R17 harness back of the deck but I am not getting signal.

What am I missing?

 

I checked the R17 pins with a multimeter today and I got nothing... Anyone have any ideas?

Does anyone have access to TIS or the schematics for P/N 86140-04080? Trying to find out exactly what each pin does.

Could anyone that has a 2013 w/ back up camera take a picture of the back of your deck and a closer picture of the 16 pin R17 connector (I need to see the colors)?

 

Took a nice long break from this topic. Someone PMed me asking if I had fixed it so I thought I would start the project back up again. He did give me a link that might help a bit.

The issue that I am finding at the moment is that I know that there is something that I need to add to run the video stream from the mirror to the deck.
I feel like I need to buy a mirror with a screen just to get that working and then reverse engineer it to go directly to the screen and sell the screen mirror.

I'm planning doing the same to my 06 which I added a oem 13 Nav, hopefully following the threads.
I have read that pending on which camera you have it will require either 5V or 12V.
Maybe that might be your issue?

 

I heard that all (05-13) oem cameras run on a 6v circuit. But, then again, I have just been trying to piece it all together from TW.

I am under the belief that the wiring that goes to the mirror gets processed and relayed through the head unit. The linked thread explains how to get it to the mirror but still does not answer which wires need to go into the deck with the video signal.

I just re-read a couple of post and I mixed up my info with a aftermarket camera.
There's a posting by DinaxMaxxum that wires up the camera to the screen following a 2012 camry install.

Lol I will definitely be posting info. It is pretty basic. The only problem now is trying to find a 16-pin R17 connector.

I will keep updating the thread as I get closer but as of right now I found that these are the connections

The 16-pin R17 plug goes directly into the back of the deck.

R17 = tailgate harness wiring:
7= Black
8= Red
15= Blue
16= White

I was unable to find the matching male side of the waterproof connector. I think it is available somewhere but I did find something almost identical (just a bit smaller). I will be replacing the OEM plug with this:

Also, What gauge wire are you running and where are you hooking up the reverse 12V to activate the camera?

 

I did see that as well. Unfortunately the pins are priced at $20 each through Toyota if I remember correctly.

I used 22awg shielded 4 conductor CL3R security cable from HomeDepot. I did cut out the ground since it was not used.

As for the reverse wire, I will have to look into that. I think I hooked that up back when I was originally looking into this installation.

 

Apparently Subaru and Toyota used similar head units. I found this diagram on a subaru forum and I know the 16-pin is right.

I built this a long time ago to be able to switch between 4 different cameras (rear, front, left, and right) for trail clearance visibility. Since I have the camera working, I can finally finish this install. The push button switch is to trick the deck into thinking I am in reverse to make the camera work any time I want. This is that small interior panel piece on the passenger side. I believe this is for the passenger airbag switch in regular/access cabs.

 

I just made a mounting plate for the front camera and pretty much finished the wires for that.



It's hard to see since it's black.

 

That's a good find for the 16 connector and pins for a great price.

I may have found the pins for the connector for the camera side of the harness.
This is a seller in Japan and I had to use google translator. I emailed the seller, waiting on a reply.
Shipping looks to be expensive. May not be worth it.

 

I just looked back at the OP and it looks like I did write it down. I used pin 2 on the R15 connector for the reverse signal.

One idea I've had on the back burner is tapping into the turning indicator circuitry to trigger Left/Right blindspot cameras. Thought it would be a fun winter project, subbed for future reference.

 

No problem! It was quite a headache. I totally pushed it aside for a while until a TW member asked me if I finished it. It only took a days work from there to finish it. I am glad to share my knowledge so that others don't have to go through what I did.

That is an interesting idea about the blind-spot cameras. I already cut into my mirrors to make a mounting location for my side view cameras but I am not sure how I would be able to specify which camera by the indicator circuit in mine since I put them all on a dial switch.

Today I received the R17 plug and got that portion finished up. I am making a housing for the front camera so that I don't bash it up on the trails but I had to move my license plate since it blocked 1/3 of the view.

If you guys order the blank R17 plugs and cannot find any pins, let me know I have a few left over from my install. I don't mind sending them to you for free but I am going to spread the wealth so only the amount that you need (which should be 4).

 

I was going to do the same... I have 2014, but missing the wires from the tailgate to receiver. I figured if I have to run wires I might as well install and front camera as well. Since the cameras are 170 degree view...I thought maybe one up front and on in the rear is enough.

Also... For R15, pin2 for the reverse signal to activate the camera on the receiver... is this signal you tie to ground or power? I suppose I can take the deck out and try to measure it, but it'll be hard since the wires will not be long enough probably...so appreciate that info. On Aliexpress they have a camera switch... so I might go that route instead of your analog mulitplexer. Also good to know that 22 gauge wire is enough. I might run 18 though.
