Oh look,another leak!

I have had the timing chain cover leak fixed under warranty, then had to have it done again, out of warranty,last month some pump behind the oil pan was leaking and this month my radiator took a crap. And getting home today I noticed the smell of burning oil, I popped the hood and saw oil on top of the passenger side heat shield,upon further inspection I can see oil filling up in this aluminum recess on the head. My truck only has 86,000 miles and change on it. Has anyone else run into this? Thanks in advance.

The leak appears to be from either the high-pressure fuel pump flange or the valve cover gasket. Suggest you clean the area with a mild degreaser and monitor.

 

Looks like valve cover gasket. Shame to see these popping up on 2016-2017s. You had the timing cover done twice and they made you pay the second time?
Motor out both times? Master tech ?

 

I see this in the photo suggesting it may be from the fuel pump flange. Need to degrease and monitor to be sure:

 

I was just out of warranty the second time , they said they changed the sealant so it shouldn’t happen again . I tried to get help from Toyota but they refused .

 

Umm, thx I guess . I needed a truck in 2016 and went with Toyota based on their reputation of good quality. I got burned sadly . I’ve cleaned the spot and am watching it . I don’t see oil up top it’s just below the valve cover . It actually looks like there’s a piece in between the head and the valve cover and I think that’s where it might be coming from.

 

You better hope thats not the cam bridge leaking. 5.7 tundras are bad about it. Cams have to come out to reseal that.

 

Man, oil leaks like the OP'S were a fact of life back in the 70's. We just cleaned them up periodically and drove the damn things.

But on the other hand, i have a 2007 FJ Cruiser with 179K miles on her and she is still tight as a drum. But I guess shit still happens. Sorry for you OP!

 

These things seem bound to leak when you put full synthetic 0w-20 in them . My Jeep Cherokee leaked oil and I just kept an eye on it. I’m planning on doing the same with this. My guess is the dealership will want to replace the head .

 

But have you checked your rear main seal?!? Just found mine leaking on my 17’ with 73k miles.

Definitely looks like the camshaft carrier leaking. It is sandwiched between the cylinder head and the valve cover. There is no "gasket" it is FIPGM or sealer. Bummer for sure.

 

Not dripping yet I don't think. I'm not sure how long it's been leaking, but you can definitely tell. Found it when I removed my skid the other day. It's going to the dealer under warranty next weekend. Crossing fingers they wont deny the warranty claim (extended warranty)

 

I saw that too, however the dust below that on the valve cover is well, dust and dry, also the darker or damp area does not appear to extend all the way down the valve cover it seems to end well before reaching the gasket area. The sealer is clearly wet, but to your point it could be coming around where we cannot see in the picture and it does look like fuel pump flange gasket is leaking at least a small amount.

 

Yep…..ya NEVER buy a 1st year model. I learned my lesson with a 99 F250 SuperDuty

 

Clean it up and trade it in.

I've had my 2016 since I bought it new with 1 mile on it. I now have 102k. It's never leaked a drop of anything. I may just be lucky.

As for scheduled maintenance or preventative measures, I change my oil every 5k with Mobile1 0w-20 and I replace the PCV valve on all my vehicles every 50k. The PCV valves are cheap and easy to do while I'm changing my spark plugs so why not.

I'll also add that my truck has not been trouble free... it just hasn't leaked anything. There were some early bugs. The manual transmission would get stuck in gear (detent pin replaced and problem solved), the rear drums were out of round (also replaced), and the differential howls like a banshee (replaced twice and still not solved).

 

Happens with traditionally reliable brands/models too. Had a coworker buy a first-year 7th gen Honda Civic. It was a basket case.

My 2018 Taco leaked from the driver's side diff CV shaft seal and the transfer case output shaft seal, but the seals were relatively inexpensive to replace. I have 29k miles on the truck.

 

You post some informative stuff, but you gotta stop normalizing these issues these trucks have.

No reason why a $45k Toyota should not be able to make it to 100k without an oil leak. You act like issues like this are to be expected.

86k miles and 2 timing cover reseals. Thats some BS.
