i have a 2004 tacoma, double cab, 3.4L V6, 4X4 AUTO TRANS. im replacing broken shifter handle on floor shifter. the problem im having is disconnecting the 2 blue wires coming from the overdrive switch at the wire harness connector. it has a piece that pops up on the connector, that i think allows the wires to be removed from the connector. im not sure if this piece comes all the way out from connector. i can only seem to pop it up about an 1/8 of an inch. im scared im gonna break it. the wires should come out because toyota sells the switch with wires and male terminals in place. i would appreciate any info on this problem. thanks everyone!!

When I had to replace mine on my old 90 4runner we just cut the lines, resoldered, and crimped the wires. But then again we had to use a simple on/off switch in place of the button. Couldn't get it to click in.
Some things on these trucks requires a little elbow grease and you might just have to give it a good pull and hope it doesn't break

    Glad you got it done.

Did you just have to pull harder or was there some kind of trick to it?

i used a very small flathead srewdriver, and inserted it in the connector above the teminal and it released the terminal from the connector.you have to insert it on the terminal side of the connector, not the wire side. the screwdriver has to be very small in diameter and thin. worked very well, needed reading glasses to see what i was doing!! eyes arent good as they used to be! shifter works great, truck did very well on beach yesterday!
