It's less Tacoma and more mod
That thing is very nice, I would rock that as-is.

Even with the more common Chevy S-10s, 2WD models are far more common than 4x4s. I have not seen many S-15 and Sonoma 4x4s, and this is definitely one of the better ones I've seen...

It is a very well-equipped 1986 GMC S-15 regular cab short bed 4x4 with the High Sierra trim. It has the 2.8L V6 (the 4.3L was not available as an option until the 1988 model year) mated to a 5-speed manual transmission! It has A/C (which worked great but needed a charge according to the owner), cruise control, tilt, and a factory AM/FM stereo cassette with graphic equalizer. Essentially, it had ever option except power windows and power locks!

If I remember correctly, I was making a grocery run for work and saw this truck in the parking lot of the supermarket. The owner was about to leave, and I approached him and we started to chat. He let me take some pictures, as you can see...

This truck is definitely 1988 or newer, as it has the 4.3L Vortec V6 engine (note the emblem below the left headlight). I am not entirely sure when GMC started using the SL, SLS, and SLE trim levels instead of High Sierra and Sierra Classic (I believe it was 1991, when the S-15 became the Sonoma). After looking closely at this truck, my best guess is that it was involved in an accident some point...

The emblem on the B-pillar says SLE and the door emblem says Sonoma, but the front end is clearly from a 1988-1990 S-15. I'm guessing it was hit in the front and that's why it has an older front clip...

Same truck, pretty much the same location (Doylestown), but pictures taken about two days apart...

This S-15 needs a fresh coat of paint, but surprisingly the body is fairly straight!

This truck is far more show than go...

It has the 2.5L "Iron Duke" 4-banger under the hood!

Another nice find in the student parking lot at college!

This was during a period of time when my Nikon SLR was acting up and spending a lot of time in the shop, so I took these pictures with my Fujifilm FinePix waterproof camera...

1991 GMC Sonoma club coupe 2WD with SLE trim, with 4.3L V6/auto, ICE COLD R-12 A/C, and power everything. According to the owner, this truck does not have a G80 locker (so it's doing the one-tire fire)...

I took these photos more than 5 years ago, and I still haven't found any 1991-1993 Sonoma club coupes since then!

This is a no-frills 1991 GMC Sonoma SL 2WD. It has the 2.5L "Iron Duke" I-4, 5-speed manual transmission, and absolutely no options. It has a factory AM radio! The owner told me he wanted to install a modern stereo with a CD player and Bluetooth, but he'd had bad experiences in the past with other S-series trucks he'd owned...

It is very easy to remove an aftermarket head unit from a 1986-1994 S-series, and thieves have this annoying habit of just ripping the head unit out without caring how much damage they cause to the dashboard (not to mention a window typically gets broken too).

Of all the S-series trucks I've photographed, this one has got to be my favorite. It's a fully loaded 1991 GMC Sonoma SLE regular cab short bed 2WD. It has the venerable 4.3L V6, 700R4 automatic, and I'm 90% sure it has the G80 locker (this was over 3 years ago, and I don't remember all the details I got from the owner). It has A/C (still R-12 and ICE COLD according to the owner), cruise control, tilt wheel, intermittent wipers, digital dash, AM/FM cassette with graphic equalizer, and even electronic instrumentation (gauges, etc; better known as a digital dash). It has pretty much every option except power windows and power locks! This is also supposedly the original paint!

This truck is proof that small, out-of-the-way car shows can hold 4-wheeled treasures!

I've posted a lot of pictures of a brand new $3 million McMansion going up on Oakland Avenue in Doylestown. The brick rancher that was there before was torn down in the summer of 2015, and construction finally began on the $3 million craftsman monstrosity in the fall of 2016 if I remember correctly...

If you look directly behind the truck to the left, you will see part of the house that used to be there...

Also, I took a quick glance through the window of this truck. Aside from the primer on the passenger side, this truck was in good condition, inside and out. All I really remember about this truck is that was a stick shift, and it had air-conditioning (don't remember the other interior details). A manual transmission and the lack of a 4.3L FUEL INJECTION emblem on the upper right corner of the tailgate are indicative of a 2.8L V6 (the 4.3L emblem could have fallen off, but for some reason I doubt it.

All 2WD S10s and Sonomas were available with the 4.3L V6/5-speed configuration, but I've only seen a couple in person. The 2.8L/5-speed configuration was so popular on these trucks (at least the S-10s; I'll have to consult my 1993 Sonoma sales brochure for info on the GMCs) in 1992-1993 is because ordering the Tahoe Value Package on a 2WD S-10 with a manual transmission gave you the 2.8L V6 at no extra cost over the standard 2.5L I-4. The Tahoe Value Package also gave you the Tahoe trim (nicer interior, chrome exterior trim). power steering (yes, even in 1993 that was an extra-cost option, but only on regular cab 2WD S-10s; standard on extra cab and 4x4s), stereo cassette, and sliding rear window, among other things. Like on our beloved Tacomas, intermittent wipers were an extra-cost option and in 1993 could be ordered as part of the Driver's Convenience Package with a tilt steering column.

Regardless, if you ordered a 1993 S-10 regular cab 5-speed 2WD with the Tahoe Value Package and didn't upgrade to the 4.3L V6, you were probably at around $9,500-$10,000 OTD. A/C could be added for about $900 more, and the G80 locking rear for $252. I believe the Driver's Convenience Package would set you back about $250-$300.

You could have a nice little V6-powered pickup with A/C, stereo cassette, and a posi rear about $11,500...

Not bad at all if I do say so myself!

Also, here's a little secret an S-10 owner told me...

You'd assume the 4.3L V6 with a 5-speed manual transmission would be a better choice than a 2.8L/5-speed. If you wanted an S-10 4x4 with a manual transmission after 1990, the 4.3L was your only choice (probably for the best). However, I've been told that while the 2.8L and 4.3L engines used the same manual transmission, the one used in 2.8L models was geared differently. 2.8L/5-speed trucks were apparently more responsive and shifted a bit quicker!

I've seen some oddly-optioned first gen S-10s and Sonomas in my time, not just in person but online (typically eBay)...

    Examples include:

A 1992 Chevrolet S-10 extended cab 4x4 with Tahoe trim with every option except intermittent wipers and tilt wheel. It had A/C, cruise control, power windows, and power locks, as well as an automatic transmission. WTF? Some people actually do not like tilt wheels, and since you had to get the tilt wheel to get the intermittent wipers, I'm guessing the original buyer really didn't want tilt steering

A 1988 or 1989 Chevrolet S-10 regular cab short bed 2WD with Tahoe trim and EVERY OPTION. It had the 4.3L V6, automatic, A/C, cruise, tilt (and thus intermittent wipers, though I believe int. wipers and tilt-wheel could be ordered separately in 1989; My 1987 and 1990 S-10 brochures say they can be)

A 1985 Chevrolet S-10 regular cab short bed 4x4 (base model) with a 2.5L Iron Duke, 5-speed stick, and factory G80 locker (a photo of the sticker in the glovebox confirmed this). In 1985, the top engine was the anemic 2.8L V6. Why the hell would you order the only engine that was even more anemic?!?! On top of that, the truck was ordered without air-conditioning. If I remember correctly, the truck was ordered with an AM/FM cassette and intermittent wipers, but that's about it. The truck was from Nevada, and it was immaculate. It would be an ideal candidate for a V8 swap!
