Pinging

Yeah, I've heard knock from HM vehicles, but not on EFIT engines that have all their sensors intact.

If it's pinging, there should be a code indicating the affected cylinder(s). If the sensors are connected. At this point, my money is on the wiring. F'ing mice. Little bastards get into everything.

 

I would maybe try resetting the ECU.

High octane fuel helps, but doesn't eliminate it...

Its always the same pattern... and always the same amount of ping... I'm racking it up to the way it works...

I complained at the dealer... And a competent tech acknowledged the issue but even with the scan tool hooked up, he said everything was normal... And assured me if it was an issue, the engine light would be on...

If you go on lexus forums, they complain about it too... And the lexus version always runs on 91...

Let that knock sensor do its job, they are just trying to save you fuel...

 

I just think this engine was intended to ping a bit. The logic in the ECU for knock feedback and timing control is essentially, "no knock, advance timing, no knock, advance timing, knock?, retard timing, repeat"

If you watch the Knock F/B Value and Knock Correction Learn Value on a scan tool / OBD2 device you can better see what its doing. When you can actually hear audible ping, likely you'll have -6 to -8 Knock FB Value, and the ECU will constantly try to keep the FB Value to -3. As it gets below -3 (to -4,etc.,) you'll see it reduce timing realtime from those measures. Mine will stick to -3 most of the time, but during shift flaring there's occasional ping and sometimes under hard acceleration, rarely audible unless I'm in an area with high walls or a building on the sides of the truck to reflect the pinging back to me.

Having same issue. Just got tune up 62K miles. Technician says everything is fine no codes and engine to him sounds normal. I noticed it more starting around 52K miles. I guess I’ll just have to get used to it.

 

Octane 89 fixed my pinging. Was using 87.
Crap gas in California!

 

The 4.0 is pretty noisy. I have an 05 Tundra with the 4.0 and it sounds like a diesel compared to the 3.5. Especially going uphill, the valve clatter gets louder but there is no harm done that I know of, it has 150k miles.
