    Slipping belt, any belt squeak? Bad pump, very low tire pressure, very low idle. Does it get better when you rev engine? If so most likely bad pump. Try flushing system and refill with some Lucas power steering restore, I have seen it work wonders.

    Maybe check your steering intermediate shaft, the universal joints might be rusted solid.

    I would still replace that intermediate shaft, spraying it with oil is only a temporary fix. In other words it could lock up while you're driving and cause an accident. I have never replaced one on a Tacoma so off the top of my head I can't tell you how hard it is to change or how to do it. On the F150 I replaced one on it was really easy. Two bolts, compress the shaft and remove.

    One word of caution: Before you remove the intermediate shaft tie the steering wheel in place and do not move it. If it gets spun while disconnected you will break the spiral cable for the airbag, horn and steering wheel radio controls etc...

    To replace the intermediate Shaft # 2 you would not need to disassemble the entire steering column.

    Tie off the steering wheel so that it doesn't get spun and break the spiral cable.

    Make Match Marks on all of the joints to make sure it goes back exactly like it came out.

    Go in from the drivers side wheel well after removing the tire, truck on jack stands.

    Disconnect the steering sliding yoke by loosening the two bolts # 35 that clamp it together.

    Remove the lower clamping bolt # 35 in the image above.

    Work the top end loose, then lower end.

    Reverse the steps to reinstall the new shaft.

    I really appreciate this procedure - I feel better about ordering the part since I don't think I'd ever get around to taking the whole steering column apart. Any hint about taking the plastic wheel liner off - might make the job easier and my wheel liner is F'd up so I am going to replace it anyway. Thanks for any help.

    Not sure but I think it is held in by plastic rivets that will just pop out. You should be able to get replacements at an auto parts store if any break.
