Has anyone tried the preprogrammed TPMS units on their 3rd gen tacos. Seems like it would be less hassle then having to buy the programming tool.

You can buy tpms already programmed. However, you need a software to update TPMS control module with new IDs.

I purchased preprogramed sensors from the mob linked below. They come preprogramed for specific vehicles, but they will need to be calibrated when installed. The set I ended up with was made in Germany.

3Gs only support four TPMS IDs to be stored in the module, so there are two ways to buy "preprogrammed" sensors:

    1) Supply the vendor with the IDs currently stored in your TPMS module for them to program the new sensors (clone existing IDs)
    2) Reprogram your TPMS module to the new sensor IDs (overwrite existing IDs)

There is no "calibration" that needs to be done...

When I was looking into another set of rims and tires there was a vendor I found who would take your codes and program the Autel sensors with the same codes. I did not take that route because the cost of the Autel programming tool and the un-programmed sensors were very close to the cost of the pre-programmed sensors.

I further justified the tool purchase knowing that sensors would fail in the future and that having the ability to clone my 2 sets of tires was an advantage. At least for me.

Calibrate…programmed…semantics. OP got the answer he needed. Hopefully that made you feel better though!

My experience with new TPMS's on a Tacoma:
Purchased the sensors linked in post #5.
Had them installed on loose wheels/tires.
After my alignment, the tech. walked around the truck with a reader/scan unit and paused at each wheel.
Used the reset button under the dash, drove the rig for a while, and the dashboard display recognized the new sensors.
    No issues since.

    Cheers

I am looking to purchase a set of winter tires and wheels with oem TPMS sensors. I would like to be able to change them out spring and fall on my own without having to go into a garage to have the truck reprogrammed... is this possible? BTW, this would be for a gen 4.

Your requirement that the sensors be OEM are a problem. To my knowledge they can’t be cloned to your existing OEM sensors so some type of programing will be necessary.

A solution is to discard your desire for OEM and get cloned sensors for the new set. There may be other solutions.

That is too bad, what are some of the more reliable brands that can be cloned? And how do you clone them?

Revisit my post #7. As stated there are sensors on the web that you supply your codes to and the seller clones them for you.

Autel is the only maker I’m familiar with and they have only been up and running on the truck for a week. I went the whole way expecting troubles in the future that I could take care of.

Hello again, just a heads up, per page 539 on the manual, the truck can be fitted with two sets of registered wheels which can be controlled through the menu system. It also seems that the registration of these TPMS sensor ID's can be initially complete through the menu system. I will be confirming this fall when i go to install my winter tires.

    This is irrelevant for 3Gs...

Looks like you mis-posted in the wrong section and I failed to grasp your initial post referencing “gen 4”.

One of us needs to more closely read the post and the other needs to read their manual. I know nothing about the 4th Gen and never will, there is enough to learn with just the electronic truck I have. Glad you found it. Good to know Toyota has finally stepped up to reality.
