    See if he/she has access to your state's Motor Vehicle database and, if so, run the VIN and see if previous owner info exists.
    There are sites online claiming to "discover" this kind of info for you, but I am sceptical.

    Shouldn’t the previous owner just be left alone? Presumably he traded in the vehicle and wouldn’t want anything more to do with it. And the discussion of using a law enforcement friend to track the person down is just plain wrong.

    If I got contacted by the new owner of a vehicle I no longer have, and found out they used law enforcement as the means of doing so, not only would I not speak to whomever it was, I'd have a serious talk with their supervisor. Not cool
