Hello everyone of taco world. So it’s time to change my oil and the owner before me didnt run synthetic oil, and I want to swap over to synthetic oil from now on but I want to make sure I buy the right oil. Does anyone have any recommendations for synthetic oil for the 4.0L V6?

    Have a nice day :)

I've always used 5W-30. Not saying it will happen to you, but a guy I worked with always ran conventional oil in his Ranger and one day he decided to switch to synthetic. The next day the motor locked up on him while driving down the highway...no clue why this happened tho. Could be just coincidental, could be just cause it was a Ford.

My 96 had 238k of conventional oil ran through her. I bought it and switched to Mobil 1 synthetic. Drove it for 70k before the head gasket started to leak.

Use what the owner's manual says to use, ensuring you are familiar with the spec they request.

Probably because he messed something up in the process. Switching to synthetic will not cause this to happen.

OP consult your owners manual. Most any API rated 5w-30 will be easy to get your hands on and will work wonderfully. On my second gen, I’m at about 260k miles with nothing but whatever synthetic is on sale or cheapest, most of the time being Supertech Synthetic from Walmart.

Well it wouldn't surprise me something was done wrong, being that it was done at one of those quick change stations. Just another reason I like to do it myself.

Yup. Grandmas Grand Prix seized because they (jiffy lube) didn’t fully tighten her drain plug. Now she lets my dad/brother take care of it for her.

I’m switching from Mobil 1 >75k miles to Shell Rotella Gas Truck. I saw a guy do a comparison video, and Shell came out ahead. Idk, though and any name brand I would be ok with. Use a better oil filter, too; I use wix XP.
I’m sending an oil sample in for testing bc I’m wack. Lol.

Frankly if you're changing your oil every 5K miles, it really doesn't make a lot of difference.

Exactly. The most important thing is that you actually change it!

The previous owner of my Cobra blew the motor after Car-X forgot to either put oil back into it or didn't tighten the drain plug...

Oucchhh! Another reason I don't like those places is that some of them just recycle old oil and use it as new.

One of my buddies dad has his front wheel come off while going down the highway after he got his tires rotated at like a Tire Kingdom or something because they didn't tighten the lug nuts.

All these testimonies is all the more reason for folks to do maintenance themselves. Especially on these trucks. It’s so easy if people are willing to learn and get their hands dirty.

I was a VP of a company that made engine and transmission coolers. I will never use anything but synth as I have seen engine coolers that have run close to a million miles on Class 8 (large tractor trailers). When we would cut them open the ones running synth were obvious - they looked practically brand new. On the other hand, I have seen coolers that ran dino that were clogged from burnt oil in less than 100,000 miles. NO COMPARISON in my book. :)

Big oof there. My dad did that once. He forgot to torque one wheel and it broke 3 studs on the highway.

I bought the car from a dealership and of course there was no mention of a new motor put in it. I didn't realize it for like 2 year, I needed a new clutch and there was a 6 bolt flywheel in there when it should have been an 8 bolt. I found a piece of paper in manual and hit had her number so I called and asked her. She said she had like $6k of work done before selling it and gave me the info of the guy who did the work. Called him and he gave me the rough rundown. He used a reman longblock it seemed and likely got a block for a newer model with an automatic since the autos came in a 6 bolt.
