    Hello.

I inherited this Tacoma from my Dad:

    tacoma pickup.jpg

My first Tacoma (also first Toyota), so I don't know a thing about them.

Paperwork says that it is a "DLX". How many models were available back then, and where does this one stand in the mix?

Now that I've shared the specifics on what I have, I hope I don't get shunned for having the wrong one like in the heated "Sport vs Off Road" discussion! :p

Welcome and that’s a sharp ride! Looks like your dad really took care of her.
I’ve got an ‘03 PreRunner that’s identical to yours but I’m not sure about the “DLX”. There were about 5 different models with many different configurations in 2003.
    Does it have a 4cyl or 6cyl?

    Body styles were
    Regular cab RC
    Extra cab EC
    Double cab DC
    Beds came in
    Short bed. SB
    Long. LB
    Engine options were
    2.4 L 4 cyl 5 lug 2 wd
    2.7L 4 cyl 6 lug 2 wd and 4 wd
    3.4L 6 cyl 6 lug 2 wd and 4 wd
    Trim options were
    Base
    SR5
    TRD
    TRD OR
Yours appears to be DCSB 3.4L 4 wd TRD OR
Double cab short bed 3.4L 6cyl. Automatic transmission, 4x4 Toyota Racing Division Off Road with rear differential lock.
DLX means you have factory AC,tilt wheel, variable speed wipers, cruise control, map, door and dome lights, tow package, cold weather package.(windshield wash)(Starter motor).
Top of the line of the best generation Tacoma. 1st gen best gen.
A real treasure. Probably worth $14,000 to $20,000+ on the west coast market.
But I'm just guessing by pic provided and a shot old man memory.

    Thanks all!

Yes, Black Dog. It has 3.4L, auto. 4x4. Sticker does say TRD Off Road, and it does have the rear diff lock.

So is "TRD Off Road" an official model name?

... when I saw "DLX" on paperwork, I flashed back to my childhood when "Custom Deluxe" Chevy trucks and "Custom" Ford trucks were the bottom of the line! :)

    @bean dip
TRD OR is an official Tacoma designation.
But posers buy the stickers and put them on pre runner 2wd to look bad ass. It adds confusion when new owners end up with a pre runner posing as a true TRD OR.
Actually the bottom of the line Chevy p/up was WT for work truck.
Ford was F150 F150 custom F150 Lariat. Maybe, I think.
Ever see a J10 Quadratrac Honcho?

DLX is about mid end. I believe that's pretty much the highest that wasn't an SR5.

Although being a TRD, it's strange that it would be a DLX. I can't recall ever seeing a TRD (especially a double cab) that wasn't an SR5.

SR5 is basically just a convenience package (a/c power windows, that type of stuff).

As for the sport vs. off road discussion, that's an easy one. 1st gens didn't have that distinction. It was TRD or nothing. Technically "TRD Off Road" but since there wasn't the Pro, off-road or sport, we just refer to them as TRDs.

    So you're good... :D

    Oh you.
    Don't get me started
I have an SR5 but didn't pay extra for DLX package which was a step up at time of new purchase.
Thanks for clearing up the TRD OR or PRO designation though.
I believe OP has an SR5 DLX.

Yeah, no, it's stupid. It's really hit or miss. The different "names" (SR5, LX, DLX, etc...) are just option packages, and they range. There are common themes to them, but especially if someone did a special order on one, all bets are off.

I usually tell people not to get too wrapped up in what name means what. Just drive, and enjoy.

Just because it didn't have a DLX badge on the exterior?
DLX was a factory package offered on Toyota incentive sales drives before your time.

@bean dip Nice Truck looooks just like my 03, only I have the chrome running boards, and to add some confusion, I have a Limited Edition. What drives me nuts is when your trying to look up parts and the three vehicle choices are Base, Pre-Runner, S-Runner. So tell me TW members, do I just choose "Base" when looking up parts.

Hey Bean Dip, give us some specs on your truck, how many miles on the odometer, and I'm guessing "Dad" made you an offer you couldn't refuse. Just keep up the basic maintenance items, but especially lower ball joints, check and see when the fluids were last changed, and let's not forget the timing belt and water pump every 90-100K miles, and she'll last you for years to come.
