Real world MPGs?

I get 22 mpg in the city and 27 mpg highway in my 24 trd off road non hybrid.

 

If MPG is a major concern for you I would look elsewhere. Bone stock minus the snowplow Sport. Completely taking it easy as still only 500 miles. A good amount of mixed driving and I am getting 19. No clue how these people are getting 25-27 as reported. I calculate manually the correct and most accurate way. Completely fill the truck up, reset the trip odometer and then when I fill up again divide the miles driven by gallons to the hundredth.

You will be disappointed as I do not think you will get close to the 23-24 you want as stated above.

 

People are rounding up, reporting an ideal downhill back wind trip, or look at their inaccurate MPG readout on the dash and not realizing it reading 25 at the moment will be averaged with their accelerating, idling, etc for actual MPG. No one is getting 27 mpg without having some fun hypermiling and consciously trying to hit those numbers haha.

I think the people who are getting the 25-27 (I'm one of them) are running lower speeds. I haven't had mine on the freeway at 75 yet (50 miles to nearest freeway).

 

Yup. I drive all state roads that vary 35-55mph zones. I rarely see interstate.

 

But it gets better mileage than the truck you chose to drive

 

What octane is being used? I've found it to get better MPG with 89 over 87.

93 octane wasnt any better than 89 and the best MPG from non ethanol.

Non ethanol in normal mode feels like sport mode in 87 too.

Also found that it gets better MPG on Hwy in sport mode than eco mode.

Best the truck has said to me is 25.9 MPG- usually says 23-24 though.

 

2-3 mpg isn't worth worrying about. If you're getting 22 mpg you save about 7 gallons of gas to drive 1000 miles vs 19 mpg. That's 1/3 of a tank of gas in 1000 miles. If you go to a car that gets 35 mpg vs 19 mpg then you start seeing real differences.

The onboard calculations are almost always optimistic. If you hand calculate you'll get 1-5 mpg less. It really depends on the vehicle. My old Tacoma doesn't have this feature so all of mine are hand calculated for that truck. My F150 has never been wrong by more than 1 mpg and is usually closer to 1/2 mpg. I can live with that. But I've owned or driven other vehicles that were consistently 3-5 mpg optimistic. Always double check by hand until you can get a feel for how accurate your onboard calculations are. Some vehicles will let you change settings to get a more accurate readout. You can with Ford, not sure about Toyota.

Using a higher octane fuel MIGHT give you a bit more power, especially with the 4th gen trucks. I doubt there is any measurable difference in fuel mileage, certainly not enough to offset the higher cost. If you tow or want better performance a higher octane fuel might be a good idea.

The old 55 mph speed limit set during the oil shortage did save gas, but most people would rather spend more on gas than drive 55. I lived through those days and don't want to go back. My 2007 is usually 19-20 mpg on interstate drives if I keep it under 70. I'm 17ish for my normal every day driving. But even in that old truck I've done 22 mpg on roads where 55 was as fast as it was safe to drive. I wouldn't be surprised if a 4th gen wasn't capable of beating that by 3-4 mpg.

 

2024 TRD O/R 190 miles yesterday , some level Some hills , 24.7 mpg full to full and divide. A little freeway 15 min @ 70, some towns @ 35 , rest 60 ish . Normal mode 89 octane Mobil

 

Just for filled up today. 351 miles 16.02 gallons 21.91 mpg computer said 21.7. 60/40 hiway/city driving. Best I’ve seen was 25.13 mpg on its first tank, drove it real easy for the break in, flat roads and no wind.

This is why you look at something like Fuelly. If you’ve had three tanks that were 24 and you remember them fondly those also need to be averaged out with the seventeen tanks that were 14 mpg haha. It’s the average of all miles driven that is your mpg, not high score highlights.

 

I got 36 MPG yesterday. (for 2 miles as I followed a semi, downhill, truck in neutral, tires inflated to 60 psi and with a tailwind of 30 MPH)

 

I mean, it is plausible...

 

So far on my 24 off road. I’m happy with that.

 

I am getting about 21-22 mpg on highway 200 mile trips (Springdale, AR to Little Rock, AR) at 70-75 mph. This includes steep grades through the Ozark “mountains” for about 25% of those 200mi and of course varying wind/weather/traffic. But that’s what I anm seeing on average. I think 23mpg is my best one way trip I have seen, but usually closer to 21mpg on average. Around town daily driving I get about 17-18, but with the caveat that I am towing a boat nearly every single day a couple of miles round trip. Still figured I would toss my experience out there as I am sure some people will be utilizing the truck for towing a bass boat regularly. Also need to point out these are hand calculated not the onboard cpu.

 

How can the dash be this dirty with under 1000 miles on it

 

I live in the county where they tar and chip roads.

 

Finally took my truck on the Interstate (75mph) and, sure enough, the mpg dropped a lot.
295 mi on country highway through the mountains (Show Low AZ to Prescott, then fill up in Chino Valley) got 24.9 mpg.
Back to Show Low by way of Flagstaff. 232 mi (141 on I40 @75mph) 21.7 mpg.
Done checking until after I get my camper shell on, and I go see the kids in CA.
