Rear Brake Conversion

I had my back brakes fail hard so I decided to put the SOS Performance rear disk brake conversion kit with parking brake in place of replacement of the rear drums.

The stopping power is awesome but I’m having a hard time getting the ebrake to work, right now after doing adjustments I can get the parking brake to hold on a 20° slope when the handle is pulled all the way back.

Has anyone else had similar issues, I go off road with mine, do I replace the ebrake cable ? If I can’t get this figured out I’m tempted to go back to drums with all their poor design.

I'd guess less than 50 on this board have made the move to rear disc and of that not a handful are 3rd gen (not that that should matter much) so you're not likely to get much in the way of experience based replies.

However, maybe @Torspd could chime in. Although he may not have retained an ebrake on his race truck.

 

Curious, you do a lot of towing? Or just wanted to get rid of the drums just cause? Disks are notoriously shitty in the e-brake/parking brake holding capabilities.

Also, curious how all this works with the ABS/Crawl Control

 

How did you go about adjusting them? My ebrake works fine on any degree slop after my conversion.

 

good to know, I’m secretly hoping the cable is screwed cause when I broke my drums there was mud caked everywhere and the ebrake failed with it. I asked the Toyota mechanic to replace the cable and he said “oh brake cables don’t fail” .... regardless of all the articles I’ve recently read about fail brake cables haha

 

I got really stuck in mud 2 times and either 1 of the times or both super fine silty mud seeped into my drum and cause it to seize up.

I didn’t know this at the time but after being stuck I should have taken the drum apart and cleaned it, because I didn’t it jammed up on a trail and broke all the inside guts on both back drums, I decided rather than fix the drums and have to worry about the cleaning, I ordered a disc brake conversion kit from sos performance.

 

Many rear disk brakes still use a drum brake for the parking brake which provides more or less the best of both worlds. Not sure how SOS is doing it though.

This is how SOS does it. It’s a custom drum shoe that gets installed and hooked up to the original mechanical Ebrake cable.

 

How’s the pedal height and pedal feel compared to the drums?

 

Did you adjust them (the retracted position) to clear the inner drum with the ebrake on or off?

I’ve played with them, but open to suggestions. Maybe I missed a step. Any help would be nice.


I left the handle all the way down (no tension)
Unthreaded the adjustment nut in the console
Removed the wheels and adjusted the star wheel until there was a noticeable tension on the wheel, then made minor adjustments to the console adjustment nut,

first day after my mileage was horrible so I backed off the console nut, and it sort of held, but now the handle has to be pulled all the way back In order to hold at a intersection on level ground with the truck in 2wd “D”

 

It felt like less pressure was needed but after a week I’m use to it as if it was normal now, definitely stops quicker

 

Sorry and the pedal feels normal

 

Traction control on the gravel roads is the same, crawl mode I haven’t played yet ... will report back if you want

 

Reached out and they just suggested the console adjustment

 

@canada_taco Did you have to change your brake proportioner? How does the brake bias feel?
