My truck has recently started clunking when accreting and when stoping slip yoke has play wondering if greasing it again would fix it I also don’t know if the backlash on my rear differential is acceptable?

More like a confused statement. Is there a question here?

Is a small amount of slip yoke play acceptable?

Can you get some sort of a measurement? A dial indicator perhaps? There is movement and a greese fitting and it must have a tolerance to slid. How many miles? What kind of maintenance? What kind of use? What symptoms? But mostly what is the actual movement? Ive never seen it but there most likely is a wear measurement out there.

I'd grease it and look seriously at the carrier bearing and ujoints first.

The carrier bearings and u joints are new the slip yoke has play but when it’s greased it temporarily goes away do I just have to constantly grease the slip yoke to stop the clunk when stopping and accelerating .Truck has 196k has been maintained well is lifted.

Sounds like you've identified the problem. Constant greasing is a band-aid, not a solution. Find a low mileage drive shaft, or a new one.

I would've guessed transmission if greasing didn't make it go away.

The backlash for the 8.4 and elocker are both the same which is 0.13 to 0.18 mm (0.0051 to 0.0071 in.). Anything outside of that range might lead you to check the carrier bearings for wear and replace as required and adjust the preload if possible.

I got under a friends truck while it was in neutral yesterday and wiggled the driveshaft back and forth and it seemed the same if not more play so ,I think I’m ok on the differental I’m going to grease the slip yoke today and see if that fixes the problem.

The rear differential when the vehicle is in drive on jackstands makes some noise but not bad noise just a small wine I think that’s normal tho I have not heard the clunk since I greased it will update if it continues.

The truck also has a low growl at highway speeds that isn’t very loud but is there seems to kinda be load and rpm specific around 2200rmp or 65-75.

The chances of a driveshaft issue are much greater than the chances of a differential issue.

u-joints, center support bearing, slip yoke.. these things take a ton of abuse throughout the life of the vehicle. If greasing seemed to help at least temporarily sounds like your driveshaft is just plain worn out

Just be careful if it gets louder

It's rare for a DS to completely fail and come apart but when they do, if you're moving at any significant speed it can beat the hell out of the underside of the truck when it flops around. Like smash brake lines or puncture the fuel tank

A driveline shop could probably build you a new rear half for a lot less money than buying a whole new drive shaft.

That’s also an option I’m going to keep an eye on it I don’t think it’s so bad that it will come apart but I’m going to figure out how to replace it before it becomes a real issue.

I kind of wonder about the vehicle as a whole. The op hasnt really stated the overall condition, the mileage, the past life under good or bad ownership, good or bad maintenance and repairs.

Theres a multitude of issues that could be the cause, most have been speculated on here.

Who's to say the globs of grease isn't just tempararily cushioning a bad carrier bearing, u joint(s), pinion to ring gap, transmission issue, broken engine or trans mount.... or maybe ALL of the above singing in harmony.

Pretty shure it’s the slip yoke noise has came back after greasing it.
