I have a 2008 tacoma prerunner sr5 with a Toyota differential with 4.10 gears. I have a buddy who has a 2009 tacoma 4x4 sr5. I believe he has a LSD and I do not. Am I correct in thinking that we could not swap complete third members since he has a LSD and I don't? Thanks for your help.

2008 was the last year for the mechanical lsd. 2009 has a brake simulated lsd(which is an open differential). Also as far as I know all the v6 Tacomas came with 3.73 gears.

So you're saying he has an open differential like mine making the swap possible? Mine had 3.73 but I bought a 4.10 rear end from my Toyota dealership and installed it a few years back. I'm wanting to go back to a 3.73. I sold mine or I'd just put it back in. That's why I ask. I need a donor that wants to swap rear ends and was looking for confirmation one way or another that my buddy's would work.

As long as both of your rearends are non e-locker, your differentials will swap.

I believe neither one of us do. How do we tell for sure? Won't it be visible on the exterior of the rear end housing? So if there's no e-locker then we can just buy new seals and fluid and swap? Plug and play like I did going from my stock 3.73 to 4.10.

There is an electrical connector plugged into the e-locker. There would also be a diff lock button in the cab.

Yes. You would just need new fluid and seals (or a tube of RTV).

He better be planning on re-gearing his front if you go forward with swapping the rear.

RTV is a sealant commonly used to make your own gaskets or using with a gasket, it's made by a company called permitex really good stuff

His buddy is 4x4, so his buddy needs to swap front diff gears too. Unless, he never plans to use 4x4 again.

Just reading what he wrote. I don't know the "buddies" truck. I'm glad, however, to not have "buddies" like you. That apparently would screw him over if he didn't know he needed to swap out his front diff.

Just saw this thread and wanted to thank you guys for giving @brandonlamb25 all the info! I'm the buddy who is swapping with him, and we are doing the swap today. Thanks again for the info so me and him could figure out if this was all possible and make it happen. I now know that in the future, I will have to perform a front regear, which will happen whenever the money lets me, because I have a second 4x4 that I can use if needed up until I get it done!

It might be worth removing your front driveshaft if you're going to do this.
