Meh. Women drivers.

They should change the name of the hill to broke back hill.

 

Had a buddy do that this last summer. He ended up spending 2 nights 3 days out there. Ended up getting some people drive out 4 hours to help him build a bridge to get the truck out. He was in a place a 2wd should not be. If he had a simple comealong he could have gotten himself out.

 

Before year end she will have full length body armor (front skid => rear diff) and rocker gaurds. ARB will come after the OME lift. Just ordered lift mate, I agree it's worth having. I think hand winch of some sort and and some chain will be it for now. Its amazing how fast you can spend a couple hundred bucks.

 

I'll tell you that after you get stuck once and have to use that tiny shovel (which I carried two of originally) you're going to get pissed and want something a lot larger. I carry a d-handled shovel that's not quite full size but close to it. It's just short enough to fit inside my tool box across the top.

If you do a lot of this stuff, ramps or waffle boards are an awesome combo with the hi-lift btw.

I just got my first recovery items. They will probably be used more from recovering people (hopefully not myself) from snowy ditches than for off road recovery (though I intend to use it some there too)

Started with the warn receiver hitch shackle and a 30' ARB snatch strap. Plan to get a hi-lift and a few 3/4" shackles soon.

Also have some sliders coming so I'll have some lift points for the hi-lift

Yeah... your back will hate you with those entrenching tools. Not to mention they have no reach so you can't scoop crap out from under the truck as well. I still keep a trifold shovel in the box as well though. Seems like I'm usually the only one with a shovel so it works out better to have an extra.

I throw them against the tailgate usually. They don't take up too much room. They're heavy though.

 

Sure thing, like you probably saw, theres a million more to watch on there as well.

In my experience, when you need a shovel, the one you have on hand will be either too large or too small for the problem you are facing.

I'm not disagreeing with you. I'm just pointing out that I have crappy luck.

One piece of really nice recovery gear - a few pieces of 2x6 or 2x8 boards about a foot long. They work as wheel chocks, small ramps, jack blocks, or if things have gotten really bad - firewood.

 

Still awesome, must get a few days of really great riding up there. I've wanted to ride up to Alaska for years. I had a professor (76yrs old!) ride up there on a BMW something, scenery was amazing. One day when I get back to the west coast.

 

The riding season is a little on the short side and the roads are a little shitty... but it is 100% worth it

I know a number of people who have ridden the Alcan and loved it. I drove it in my taco and it was pretty rough... GORGEOUS drive though!

 

What are everyone's thoughts on straps with hooks? bought a pro comp strap that came with hooks on both ends? also what size shackles should I carry 5/8, 3/4? thanks for any help guys

Order of gear based on price and necessity
Shovel/axe
Highlift (only if you have a place to highlift off of)
Traction boards like maxtrax
Recovery strap and d rings (if you wheel with friends move this up the list)
Winch/ Tree-savers / snatch block

 

What size shackles should I have? great list. up here we do alot of snow running

 

If can't afford a winch I used to carry a com a long.
As nick said get the Necessity's first.
Straps with hooks aren't the safest out there but will save your ass if you need them and that's all you got.just use caution when using them and don't stand or let anyone else stand , in the line of pull.
Everyone should carry straps and a shovel minimum.

 

Everyone seems to have summed up the essentials.

+1 vote for carrying 2x10 scrap for cribbing, blocking, firewood ICOE.

Floor mats can be used as emergency traction mats in a pinch.

For winter offroading, I like to carry a couple of sand tubes and 50 lbs. of kitty litter in the bed.

 

thanks guys they are all great suggestions. winch is not on the picture at this time but strap, shackles, shovel and sand is no problem.
