Remote Start

These cars now have the whole stop/start system, so the starters are meant to start and stop dozens of times each day while you are driving. Doing it one more time is not going to kill the starter.

It's really a shame, because that would bring a lot of value to a vehicle for me in Michigan where the last 2 winters have been very cold. My next vehicle will have this for sure.

 

Why don't you install aftermarket remote start? The factory one sucks, has limited range, and no features.
I can remote start my Taco with an app on my phone from anywhere in the world, not to mention lock/unlock/gps location/vehicle temperature/etc.

 

No aftermarket company's have them yet either from my understanding.

 

I just installed Viper 5906V + SmartStart on my 3rd gen. Works great. Only issue I have is opening the door kills the engine. I'm searching for a bypass that will let me override that.

I've got the Excalibur AL-2050-EDPB remote start/ security system by Omega. I remotely start my truck all the time to let the engine temp warm up before I hit the road. I have no issue starting my truck and leaving it on while I open the door. One of the theft prevention features to my system is having the kill switch wired to the brake pedal. If somebody hops in the truck while it's running and I'm inside, if tried to put in drive the truck shuts off as soon as the brake pedal is pressed if it doesn't sense the key in the ignition first

 

I assume you're talking about your second gen, I had the same features on my 2nd gen with a manual (H) key. No issue on the 2nd gen.
The problem is the 3rd gen with the push button start. This is a Toyota wide problem where opening the door kills the remote start. Toyota says its a "safety feature". It's quite ridiculous. There are some after market bypass modules that defeat that mechanism like the Sienna video I posted earlier.
If you are talking about a 3rd gen, which bypass module do you have?

 

I wouldn't worry about having a reputable car audio / alarm shop install a remote start for you. There is nothing wrong with a properly soldered installation of an after market alarm or remote start. Fact is that it will be a better device, have more options and be cheaper than paying for an OE version.

 

Yes your right Im talking about my 2nd gen, my bad fellas I didn't realize the discussion was only 3rd gen remote starters. Although my aftermarket setup required a bypass module as well, I used ADS-BLADE-AL built like a card that slides in the slot to the brain of my system. I talked to an after market company that installs starters here in NY and on the 2016 they have one that will work. My wife had a Factory one on a 4Runner and it sucked, I will go with an aftermarket when my truck arrives, and if I have the dealership bring it there they cover it under warranty. And if you have push button start no matter if its after market or stock the vehicle will shut down as soon and the door is unlocked or opened...

 

Watch the video I posted. There are bypass kits that override the door trigger. In the video he bypassed everything including side door and trunk!
I just need to find one that works with the 3rd gen Taco.

Thanks for link, but this is for standard key only, no Push-Start support yet. I'll keep checking the site.

 

My dealer is going to install the Viper for me in 2-3 weeks.

 

I had the 5706 installed 2 weeks ago. My I have traditional turn style key so it does not turn off the vehicle when you get in it.

I did have to lose a key. Which is fine. I like aftermarket a lot better then stock too. Has longer range. You know if your car is started and better alarm. Alerts your fob and phone. Well worth it.

I have the smart start on my other car. Debating getting it in the truck too.

 

I had one put in my truck. I didnt know it was going to shut off when i opened the door. I called the installer and he said that it was what everyone is saying its a "safety feature." He told me that he could work around some makes but he could not get around the push start Toyotas. It bothered me for a bit but i really only use it when it gets really cold so it doesn't bother me anymore.

EVO-ALL) doesn't support "key takeover". He uses Cool Start by CrimeStopper, but I don't think this is an issue with the remote starter. It's the bypass module required to make the truck think the fob is inside and allow it to start.

Just wanted to see if anyone has been able to successfully get one installed that allows the door to be opened without shutting the truck off??

 

Can you elaborate more on "lose a key"... I'm not cool with being kicked down to only 1 key for the truck.
